S46500 (UNS S46500), commonly marketed as Custom 465® and designated BÖHLER N765, is a premium, low-carbon martensitic precipitation-hardening (PH) stainless steel engineered for an exceptional balance of ultra-high strength, superior toughness, and robust corrosion resistance. Produced via double vacuum melting (VIM + VAR) for exceptional purity and uniform microstructural integrity, it is specified under ASTM A693, ASTM A564, AMS 5936, and ASTM F899 (medical grade), making it a go-to choice for critical, failure-intolerant applications across aerospace, marine, oil & gas, and medical sectors[3][5][6].

Chemical Composition

S46500’s ultra-low carbon content (≤0.02%) eliminates brittle carbides, ensuring excellent weldability and toughness while preserving corrosion resistance[15]. Core alloying elements include 11.0–12.5% chromium (forms a protective passive film for baseline corrosion protection), 10.75–11.25% nickel (stabilizes martensite and enhances toughness), 0.75–1.25% molybdenum (boosts resistance to pitting, crevice, and chloride-induced stress-corrosion cracking [SCC]), and 1.50–1.80% titanium (drives precipitation of Ni₃Ti intermetallic phases during aging for core strengthening)[11][15]. Trace elements (Mn ≤0.25%, Si ≤0.25%, P ≤0.015%, S ≤0.010%, N ≤0.01%) are tightly controlled to minimize inclusions and avoid hot brittleness, with iron balancing the composition[15].
