Maraging 250 (Vascomax® C250, UNS K92890 / K92940, AMS 6512) – 500-Word English Introduction

Maraging 250 is an ultra-high-strength, low-carbon precipitation-hardening martensitic steel, widely known as Vascomax® C250, with UNS K92890/K92940 and AMS 6512 as its primary industry specifications. Unlike conventional high-strength steels that gain hardness from carbon carbides, its strength comes from fine intermetallic precipitates (Ni₃Ti, Ni₃Mo) formed during a low-temperature aging heat treatment, delivering an unmatched balance of extreme strength, excellent toughness, and exceptional dimensional stability.

Chemical Composition

It features an ultra-low carbon content (≤0.03%) to avoid brittle carbides and ensure superior weldability. Key alloying elements include 17.5–18.5% nickel (stabilizes martensite and enables precipitation), 7.0–8.0% cobalt (boosts matrix strength and aging response), 4.6–5.2% molybdenum, 0.3–0.5% titanium, and minor aluminum (0.05–0.15%), with iron as the balance. Produced via Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) + Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR), it achieves exceptional purity and uniform properties.

Key Mechanical Properties

After solution annealing (815–845°C, air cool) and aging (480–500°C for 3–6 hours), Maraging 250 reaches a minimum tensile strength of 250 ksi (1725 MPa), yield strength ≥225 ksi (1550 MPa), hardness 50–52 HRC, elongation 8–12%, and outstanding fracture toughness. In the solution-annealed state, it is soft (30–35 HRC), highly machinable, formable, and weldable without preheating or post-weld heat treatment, minimizing distortion during fabrication.
