The Australian SAA certification standard for plugs and sockets, AS/NZS 3112, has been updated.
The new AS/NZS 3112:2025 standard was published on November 21, 2025, replacing the 2017 version of AS/NZS 3112 and its 2021 revisions. The 2017 version remains in effect but will be withdrawn on November 21, 2027.
The new version of AS/NZS 3112:2025 was released on November 21, 2025, superseding the 2017 edition of AS/NZS 3112 and its 2021 revision. The 2017 edition remains valid but will be withdrawn on November 21, 2027.
Major technical changes in the new edition (2025):
■ Addition requirements for socket outlets to include additional protection to prevent contact with live parts via aperture sets.
■ Addition of a category for "sockets with clamping or locking devices," typically used in applications requiring protection against accidental plug detachment, such as industrial equipment or medical devices.
Inclusion of a new, defined class of socket outlets.
■ New socket classification requirements, refining the classification standards for sockets: ELV plugs and sockets, protective plugs, plugs and equipment containing plug portions, sockets with additional protection, etc.
Addition of requirements for a new classification of socket.
■ New requirements for insulation piercing terminals or connecting devices.
■ New withdrawal force test for plugs and sockets with clamping or locking devices.
■ Exclusion of the use of defined plug pins for detachable connections.
■ Clarified safety requirements for detachable plugs; detachable plugs must have no exposed live parts and meet electric shock protection requirements.
Clarification of access-to-live-parts requirements.
■ Additional requirements for detachable plug portions. This applies to equipment including plug portions; plugs from other countries are not evaluated.
■ Addition of requirements for single spring-assisted contact strength test. This assesses the voltage drop of the clamping element under temperature cycling to ensure safe and reliable electrical performance.
