WOODWARD 8273-1017 2300E Digital Load Sharing and Speed Control
I. Overview
WOODWARD 8273-1017 is a full-authority speed governor belonging to the 2301E series, with its core positioning as a precision control unit for the speed and load of diesel/gas engines. Specifically designed for industrial and marine applications, this controller features full-authority speed regulation, load distribution and stable control functions. It can be directly adapted to equipment such as generator sets, marine auxiliary engines and industrial drive devices. By real-time monitoring of engine speed signals and automatically adjusting fuel supply, it achieves constant-speed operation and balanced load distribution of equipment, serving as a core control component to ensure the efficient, stable and safe operation of engines.
Compatible with multiple scenarios including onshore industrial use, marine vessels and trailers, the controller supports three-phase AC output and wide-voltage power supply, and has excellent environmental adaptability and anti-interference capability. With its compact structure and convenient commissioning, it can be seamlessly integrated into generator sets, backup power systems and other equipment. Widely used in fields such as power backup units, marine power systems and industrial production drives, it balances control precision and long-term operation reliability, providing accurate speed regulation solutions for various power equipment.
II. Core Features
Full-authority Precision Speed Regulation: Adopting a closed-loop control algorithm, it can precisely adjust the speed of diesel/gas engines, supporting constant-speed operation control and dynamic load distribution. It can quickly respond to speed fluctuations, suppress external interference, and ensure that the engine maintains a stable speed under different load conditions, with high speed regulation accuracy and fast response speed.
Wide-voltage & Multi-scenario Adaptation: Supporting dual-voltage power supply specifications, the high-voltage model is suitable for 90–150V DC or 85–132V AC, and the low-voltage model is suitable for 20–40V DC, which can flexibly meet the power supply requirements of different scenarios. It is compatible with various application scenarios such as onshore industry, marine vessels and trailers, and is suitable for backup units and continuous-duty units.
Three-phase AC Output & Driving Capability: Equipped with standard three-phase AC output interfaces, it can directly drive actuators (e.g., fuel actuators) without additional adapter modules, simplifying the control link. Its output power and driving capability are compatible with most actuators of industrial and marine engines, with stable control signals and sufficient driving force.
High Reliability & Anti-interference Design: Encapsulated with industrial-grade components, it has good vibration resistance and electromagnetic interference resistance, and can withstand electromagnetic radiation, voltage fluctuations and other interferences in industrial sites and marine working conditions. With a robust structure, it is suitable for harsh environments with wide temperature and humidity fluctuations, and has a long service life.
Convenient Commissioning & Operation and Maintenance: Supporting manual and automatic commissioning modes, parameter setting is intuitive and easy to understand. Acceleration ramp adjustment can be realized through external terminals (adjustable from 0–10 seconds, activated by closing terminals 19 and 16). Fault status can be directly displayed through signal feedback, facilitating maintenance personnel to quickly locate problems and reduce maintenance costs.

IV. Working Principle
The WOODWARD 8273-1017 controller is based on a closed-loop control process of signal acquisition – logical operation – execution and regulation, realizing precise control of engine speed through real-time monitoring and dynamic regulation. The specific working process is divided into three core stages:
Stage 1: Speed Signal AcquisitionThrough built-in or external speed sensors, the controller collects the crankshaft speed signal of the engine in real time, converts the physical speed signal into an electrical signal, and filters out clutter interference in the signal to ensure the accuracy of the collected data, providing a reliable basis for subsequent regulation.
Stage 2: Logical Operation & Command GenerationThe controller compares the collected actual speed with the preset speed value, calculates the speed deviation through a closed-loop control algorithm, and generates regulation commands combined with load changes. If it is necessary to adjust the acceleration rate, the acceleration ramp function can be activated by closing terminals 19 and 16, and the acceleration rhythm can be adjusted within the range of 0–10 seconds to avoid the impact of sudden speed changes on the engine.
Stage 3: Execution & Regulation & Stable ControlThrough the three-phase AC output interface, the controller transmits regulation commands to actuators such as fuel actuators, controlling the increase or decrease of fuel supply to adjust the engine speed, so that the actual speed approaches the preset value. At the same time, it monitors the regulation effect in real time, dynamically corrects the regulation commands, resists the influence of external factors such as load fluctuations and voltage interference, maintains the constant-speed operation of the engine, and achieves balanced load distribution.
