WOODWARD 5501-380 MicroNet/5009 Digital Control Series
I. Overview
WOODWARD 5501-380 is a redundant power supply board, positioned as a "power supply guarantee unit for the core of TMR control systems". Its core function is to provide stable and reliable 24VDC power supply for the core modules of TMR control systems. Through redundant design and circuit balancing technology, it greatly improves the reliability of the power supply system. Meanwhile, it supports hot-swappable replacement, ensuring that the control system can still operate uninterruptedly during power module maintenance or in case of faults, and avoiding equipment shutdown or control failure caused by power supply interruption.
Adopting a board-type structural design, this power supply board needs to be embedded in a dedicated TMR power supply chassis for installation. A maximum of two such redundant power supply modules can be configured in a single chassis to form a dual redundancy guarantee. It operates on a 24VDC input power supply and is installed via fixed wiring. Equipped with circuit load sharing and balancing function, it can effectively reduce the operating temperature rise of the equipment and improve long-term operational stability. The product is widely used in industrial scenarios with extremely high requirements for power supply reliability, such as thermal power plants, gas turbine generator sets, oilfield drive equipment, and marine propulsion systems. It is a core power supply component for the stable operation of Micronet TMR control systems.
II. Core Features
Exclusive Adaptation to TMR Systems and Redundant Power Supply: Specifically designed for Woodward 5009/Micronet TMR control systems, it can be accurately connected to the core power supply modules to provide stable power supply for the core units of the system. It supports dual redundancy configuration, where two modules in a single chassis can work collaboratively. When one module fails, the other can seamlessly take over the power supply, ensuring uninterrupted system operation and greatly reducing the risk of power supply failures.
Hot-swappable Function and Maintenance Convenience: It has hot-swappable replacement capability, allowing faulty modules to be removed and replaced without shutting down the control system. This avoids system downtime caused by maintenance operations, significantly reduces operation and maintenance downtime losses, and improves equipment operation and maintenance efficiency.
Circuit Balancing and Low-power Heat Dissipation Design: Integrated with circuit load sharing and balancing technology, it can balance the working load of the two redundant modules. This not only improves the overall power supply reliability, but also effectively reduces the operating load and temperature rise of a single module, extends the service life of the module, and meets the requirements of 24/7 continuous operation in industrial scenarios.
Multi-status Indication and Fault Early Warning: Equipped with four core status indicator lights, corresponding to four states: power failure, normal operation, over-temperature alarm, and input failure. It intuitively feeds back the working status of the module through different light signals, facilitating operation and maintenance personnel to quickly identify fault types and shorten fault troubleshooting time.
Industrial-grade Safety and Adaptability: Adopts fixed wiring installation method, with dedicated wiring specifications for AC application scenarios. It has no built-in power switch, and power disconnection must be achieved through external multi-channel power-off methods, ensuring operational safety during installation and maintenance, and complying with industrial-grade electrical safety standards.

IV. Working Principle and Application Logic
The WOODWARD 5501-380 power supply board provides high-reliability power supply guarantee for Micronet TMR control systems based on the core working logic of "redundant power supply - balanced collaboration - status monitoring - fault switching". Its core working process is as follows:
Phase 1: Power Supply Initialization and Collaborative WorkAfter the power supply board is connected to the 24VDC input power supply, it completes self-diagnosis, confirms that the internal circuit is normal, and then enters the working state. When two redundant modules are configured in the chassis, they work collaboratively through circuit load sharing and balancing technology to balance load distribution, reduce operating temperature rise, and jointly provide stable power supply for TMR core modules.
Phase 2: Status Monitoring and Signal FeedbackThe module monitors the status of the input power supply, its own operating temperature, and the integrity of the power supply circuit in real time through the built-in detection circuit, and synchronously feeds back the working status through four status indicator lights. When any power converter fails, the power failure indicator light (red) is turned on to send a fault early warning signal in a timely manner.
Phase 3: Fault Switching and Emergency GuaranteeWhen one of the power supply modules detects a fault (such as input failure, over-temperature, or power converter failure), the other normal module can seamlessly take over all power supply tasks, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to the core modules and avoiding control system shutdown. If the power supply fault is caused by a short circuit, the short circuit problem must be eliminated first before the module can resume normal operation.
Phase 4: Hot-swappable Maintenance and System ResetFaulty modules can be replaced via hot swap without shutting down the system. After the new module is installed, it automatically completes initialization, integrates into the redundant power supply system, and restores the dual redundancy guarantee. During maintenance, the power supply of the faulty module must be cut off through external multi-channel power-off methods to ensure operational safety.
