NRCan Energy Efficiency Certification in Canada
NRCan is a mandatory energy efficiency certification program of Natural Resource Canada, regulated by the Energy Efficiency Act and the Energy Efficiency Regulations. It covers household appliances, commercial refrigeration equipment, electronic products (battery chargers, compact audio products, external power supplies, televisions, video products), heating and air conditioning equipment, industrial/commercial equipment, lighting products, and water heaters.
Since 2014, Natural Resource Canada (NRCan) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have worked together to adapt new and updated energy efficiency standards and testing methods for energy-consuming consumer products and equipment.
Natural Resource Canada (NRCAN): Natural Resource Canada is responsible for developing energy efficiency regulations in Canada. Products within the scope of NRCAN must be tested, certified, and registered by a Canadian-accredited certification body. There are annual fees associated with this process, and applications are typically submitted individually for basic control purposes.
