Fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced spool-type relief valves are normally closed pressure-regulating valves, commonly used to protect hydraulic components from transient pressure shocks. The valve achieves rapid opening and closing at the expense of smoothness. When the pressure at the inlet (port 1) reaches the valve's set value, the valve begins to relieve flow to the tank (port 2), throttling to limit the pressure rise. The pressure fluctuations of such valves vary little with flow and they respond quickly.
