The S215VPROH2B is a component manufactured by General Electric for its Mark VI system. The Mark VI is one of the last gas turbine and steam turbine management systems to be released by GE as part of the Speedtronic family, GE's primary turbine management family. From the late 1960s with the release of the Mark I to the 1990s with the development of the Mark VI and Mark VIe. The Mark VI is considered a "total system solution" for turbine management, including integrated hardware and software built to work together.
The IS215VPROH2B is an Emergency Turbine Protection card (VPRO). The PCB and its associated terminal board (TPRO/TREG) provide an independent emergency overspeed protection system for the Mark VI. The module's trip solenoid valve is separate from the turbine control system and is located on the TREG board. The turbine may be tripped by any terminal plate. The TREG board provides a positive connection to the solenoid, and the TPRO provides a negative connection. Note that the VPROH2 is a low-power board that can only support one TREG.
Installation:
Shut down the VME processor I/O rack.
After positioning the edge connector by hand, slide the VPRO board into place.
Tighten the top and bottom of the front panel with additional screws.
Open the VME rack and check the top diagnostic indicator on the front panel.
Controls:
The main use of the protection module is for emergency overspeed (EOS) protection of the turbine using three VPRO boards. In addition, the VPRO has backup synchronous check protection, 3 analog current inputs and 9 thermocouple inputs, mainly for exhaust overtemperature protection of gas turbines.
The protection module is always triple redundant with three fully independent and self-contained VPRO boards named R8, S8, and T8 (originally called X, Y, and Z). Any one of these panels can be turned off and replaced while the turbine is running without compromising the protection system. Each board contains its own I/O controller. Communication allows launch of test commands from the controller to the protection module and monitoring of EOS system diagnostics on the controller and operator interfaces. Communication resides on the VPRO board, which is the heart of the system. The VPRO board has a VME interface, allowing programming and testing in the VME rack; However, when a protection module is inserted, the backplane is neutralized to eliminate any continuity between the three separate parts.
