Working principle
Ethernet switch works at the second layer (data link layer) of the OSI network reference model. It is a network device based on MAC (Media Access Control) address identification and Ethernet data frame forwarding.
The ports on a switch that are used to connect computers or other devices are called ports. The computer is connected to the switch port through a network cable using a network card. Each port of network cards, switches, and routers has a MAC address that is solidified in the EPROM of the device by the device manufacturer. The MAC is assigned by IEEE, and each MAC address is globally unique. The MAC address is a 48-bit binary address. The first 24 bits are the manufacturer identifier, and the last 24 bits are the serial number assigned by the manufacturer.
The switch accepts the data frame sent by the computer on the port, searches the MAC address table according to the destination MAC address of the frame header, and forwards the data frame from the corresponding port to achieve data exchange.
The working process of the switch can be summarized as "learning, memory, receiving, table lookup, forwarding" and other aspects: Through "learning", you can know the MAC address of the device connected to each port; The mapping between MAC addresses and port numbers is "memorized" in memory to produce MAC address tables. After the data frame is "received" from a port, the port number corresponding to the destination MAC address in the frame header is "found" in the MAC address table, and then the data frame is "forwarded" from the found port.
The switch divides conflict zones and creates an independent conflict zone for each port. If a large amount of data is sent to each port, the port will first store the received data waiting to be sent to the register, and then send out when it is the turn to send.
