I. Product Overview


Rockwell Automation 1746-IM16 is a 16-point isolated digital input module in the SLC 500 series. It is mainly used in industrial automation control systems to collect digital signals in on-site environments with high electromagnetic interference. It is widely applied in industrial scenarios with strong interference such as motor control, metallurgical equipment, and heavy machinery. II. Functional Features


Isolation protection design: It adopts electrical isolation technology between channels. IV. Working Principle


Signal access and isolation: The 16 input channels of 1746-IM16 are connected to on-site devices such as contactors, relays, and limit switches through terminal blocks. When on-site devices act to generate switching signals (high level or low level), the signals first enter the isolation circuit of the module. The isolation circuit uses methods such as photoelectric coupling or electromagnetic isolation to electrically isolate external signals from the internal circuit of the module and the backplane bus, preventing external interference signals from entering the system.


Signal conditioning and shaping: The isolated signal enters the signal conditioning circuit, which filters the signal to remove noise and interference components; at the same time, it shapes the signal, converting irregular signal waveforms into standard rectangular waves to ensure the integrity and stability of the signal.


Signal conversion and transmission: The conditioned signal is converted into a logic signal recognizable by the PLC system ("1" indicates signal ON, "0" indicates signal OFF). These logic signals are transmitted to the CPU module through the backplane bus of the SLC 500 series, providing a basis for the logical control of the system.


Status indication and system response: The LED indicators on the module light up or go off synchronously according to the signal status of each channel, feeding back the input signal situation in real time. After receiving the logic signal, the CPU module performs operations and judgments according to the preset control program, and issues corresponding control instructions to realize automatic control of on-site equipment. For example, when a motor overload protection signal is detected, the CPU can control the motor to stop running according to the program, playing a role in protecting the equipment.
