Mattress Application to BS 7177
BS 7177 is the UK's core standard for the flame retardancy of furniture such as mattresses and bed frames. Its core goal is to ensure the fire safety of products in specific usage scenarios through the classification of different hazard levels. According to the standard requirements, the test level of the mattress must select the corresponding hazard level according to its final use.
According to the above table, it is recommended that:
• Home use: select low risk level to meet general fire protection requirements
• Hotel/public places: mandatory selection of medium risk level, because it involves public safety regulations
• Hospital/prison: need to select high or very high risk level according to specific areas, for example, hospital wards need to pass high risk test
Also note that this standard does not apply to cushioned seats on vehicles.
Fire source type and test intensity:
Different risk levels, different test standards, different ignition sources
• Low risk level fire source: smoldering cigarette (BS EN 597-1), simulated match flame (BS EN 597-2)
• Medium risk level fire source: all low risk fire sources, pine wood fire 5
• High risk level fire source: all low risk fire sources, pine wood fire 7
• Very high risk level fire source: all high risk fire sources, additional fire sources
