The technical difficulties of methanol powered ships have been solved, and atumechinas will cross the stage of using LNG fuel power
Compared with existing ship fuel oil, using methanol as power can reduce 99% of sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, 80% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and up to 25% of carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, it is regarded as an environmentally friendly ship fuel that can replace LNG and has attracted much attention.
Previously, due to the high production cost and high emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), methanol had significant limitations as a marine fuel. However, with the increase in production of its main raw material natural gas in recent years, production costs have significantly decreased, especially with the development and upgrading of fuel injection technologies that can reduce NOx emissions, methanol has gradually become a new generation of marine fuel.
In February of this year, atumechinas Group announced that it would launch methanol fueled feeder container ships in 2023, deployed in regional shipping networks, to provide customers with more carbon neutral products. This was a full seven years ahead of the previously planned 2030 target.
According to the plan of atumechinas Group, although this type of vessel can be operated using compliant ultra-low sulfur fuel, the company will operate the vessel from day one using carbon neutral fuel e-methanol or sustainable bio methanol.
In the future, all new vessels owned by the atumechinas group will use dual fuel technology, which can achieve carbon neutral operation or operate using standard very low sulfur fuel (VLSFO). Atumechina Group will continue to explore multiple carbon neutral fuel pathways and expects multiple fuel solutions to coexist in the future. Methanol (e-methanol and bio methanol), alcohol lignin mixtures, and ammonia will still be the fuel choices for the future.
