AlSiC Microwave Housing and Heat Sink
AlSiC material used as microwave housing and heat sink has several advantages:
1. AlSiC coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) value is compatible with direct IC attachment;
2. AlSiC's weight is much like aluminum, much lighter than CuW's, tungsten and molybdenum, which make it ideal for weight sensitive applications;
3. AlSiC can be made net shape
Hint:
Yes, microwave parts always require high precision in their dimension, roughness and flatness, which beyond the reach of cast process, machining is necessary in most situation. Just keep in mind that AlSiC is so rigid that most machine tools cannot do the job except diamond and cubic boron nitride tools, which are very expensive.
Also, machining of AlSiC parts removes the aluminum skin outside the parts, if we machine some facets and leave other, the final coating might looks different.
Machining the parts after casting will double the manufacturing cost.
