The unique characteristics of pre-stressed concreteallow predetermined, engineering stresses to be placed in members to counteractstresses that occur when the unit is subjected to service loads. This isaccomplished by combining the best properties of two quality materials: highstrength concrete for compression and high tensile strength steel strands fortension.
Actually, pre-stressing is quite simple. High tensile strands are stretchedbetween abutments at each end of long casting beds. Concrete is then pouredinto the forms encasing the strands. As the concrete sets, it bonds to thetensioned steel. When the concrete reaches a specific strength, the strands arereleased from the abutments. This compresses the concrete, arches the memberand creates a built in resistance to service loads.
