Single Column Mixing (SCM) auger is a specialized tool used in Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) for ground improvement and soil stabilization. Unlike standard drilling augers designed to remove soil, the mixing auger is engineered to blend the existing soil with a binder (typically cement or lime slurry) to create a high-strength "soil-cement" column.
Design and Components
The SCM auger features a distinct architecture designed to maximize mechanical agitation while injecting fluids:
Hollow Stem: The central shaft is hollow to allow the cement slurry or grout to be pumped down to the cutting head and injected into the soil during rotation.
Mixing Blades: Instead of a continuous flight (spiral), the auger has several sets of discontinuous blades or "paddles" set at specific angles. These blades are designed to shear the soil and fold it into the binder.
Cutting Teeth: Located at the bottom of the auger, these teeth break up the natural soil structure to prepare it for mixing.
Counter-Rotating Sections (Optional): Some advanced SCM systems use sections that rotate in opposite directions to prevent "plugging" and ensure a more homogeneous mix.

Operational Process
The SCM process generally follows these steps:
Penetration: The auger drills into the ground to the design depth. In some methods, partial grout injection begins during this phase to lubricate the tool.
Injection and Mixing: Once the target depth is reached, the binder is pumped through the hollow stem. The auger is then slowly withdrawn while rotating, thoroughly blending the grout with the soil.
Completion: The result is a solid, cylindrical column of soil-cement that, once cured, provides significantly higher bearing capacity and lower permeability than the original ground.
Common Applications
Foundation Support: Strengthening soft soils to support buildings, embankments, or bridge abutments.
Liquefaction Mitigation: Reducing the risk of soil liquefaction in seismic zones.
