  It also called upright settler. The tank body plan drawing is circle , water will enter into tank inside in tank center inlet water pipe from top to bottom ( the flow rate in tube should  less than 30mm/s, 

below the tube set umbrella type baffle to make the waste water slowly rise in tank after uniform distribute 

along the whole cross section water level ( for domestic sewage, usually, it is 0.5-0.7mm/s,settling time adopt 1-1.5h), suspended solids subside enter into tank bottom taper sludge bucket, the purify water flow out around tank along overflow weir .

 Set baffle  and floating scum slot before weir to intercept floating scum and guarantee effluent water quality cleaning.  

One side from tank set sludge discharge pipe which rely on static water pressure discharge sludge at regular. 

The advantage of vertical settler is small occupy area, easy discharge sludge, disadvantage is big depth, difficult construction, high budget. 

Usually used in sewage treatment plant which treatment capacity less than 20000m3/d.

Theory basis: 

   Vertical settler, water flow direction and particles in the opposite direction , its intercept speed and water flow raise speed equality, 

the particles which ascending speed equal to settling speed will suspend in mixing liquid to form one layer suspended layer,  intercept and filter the rising particles. 

Thus , vertical settler ‘ efficiency is higher than horizontal flow settler. 
Working principle: 

 In vertical settler, sewage do upright flow from top to down in flow rate V, the suspended particles in sewage has three type motion state:

1) when particles settling speed u>v, particles will settling down in U-V  difference speed ; 

2)when  u=v,particles stay in random state, it won’t sink, won’t rise ;

3) when u<v,particle won’t settling down,it will take away by raising water.

Construction:   

   The plane of vertical settler can be circle,square or polygon . In order to make water distribution unique in tank, tank diameter should n ’t bigger ,

usually 2~7m, didn’t bigger than 10m, in order to reduce tank height, sludge district can adopt several buckets discharge sludge . The diameter with effective water depth ratio no bigger than 3 usually.
