ASTM A240 310S Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Plate
a. Product Introduction
The 310S Stainless Steel Hot Rolled Plate is a fully austenitic, heat-resistant chromium-nickel stainless steel manufactured in compliance with ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480 standards. Grade 310S (UNS S31008, EN 1.4845, JIS SUS310S) contains 24.0-26.0% chromium and 19.0-22.0% nickel – significantly higher than 300-series grades such as 304 or 316. This elevated alloy content provides exceptional resistance to oxidation, scaling, and corrosion at temperatures far exceeding the capabilities of conventional stainless steels.
The low carbon content (≤0.08%) distinguishes 310S from standard 310 (which has carbon up to 0.25%), making it particularly suitable for welded applications where sensitization and intergranular corrosion are concerns. The material is hot rolled, annealed, and pickled, yielding a No.1 mill finish – a rough, matte, scale-free surface that is ready for further fabrication. Thickness ranges from 6.0 mm to 20.0 mm, with standard widths up to 3000 mm and lengths up to 12000 mm. Custom dimensions are available upon request.
310S is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Its combination of high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and fabricability makes it the material of choice for demanding high-temperature applications across multiple industries.
b. Core Selling Points (4 advantages)
1.Extreme High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance
The high chromium (24.0-26.0%) and nickel (19.0-22.0%) content enables 310S to form a stable, tightly adherent chromium oxide protective layer under continuous thermal cycling. This alloy resists oxidation and scaling up to 1150 deg C (2102 deg F) in continuous service and up to 1093 deg C (2000 deg F) in intermittent service. Oxidation resistance is approximately three times greater than 304H stainless steel. The material also exhibits excellent resistance to sulfidation and carburization in hydrocarbon processing environments.
2.Low Carbon Content – Weldability and Thermal Cycling Stability
With carbon limited to ≤0.08%, 310S offers superior resistance to carbide precipitation during welding and exposure to sensitization temperatures (425-815 deg C). This eliminates the risk of intergranular corrosion in welded fabrications and maintains ductility through repeated heating and cooling cycles. The material is readily weldable by all standard methods (TIG, MIG, SMAW, and resistance welding). For heavy sections, post-weld annealing at 1040-1120 deg C followed by rapid cooling (water quenching for heavier sections, air for lighter sections) is recommended to restore full corrosion resistance.
3.Robust Mechanical Performance at Room and Elevated Temperatures
Per ASTM A240, the annealed plate delivers tensile strength ≥515 MPa (typical 515-700 MPa), 0.2% proof stress ≥205 MPa, and elongation ≥40% (50 mm gauge length). Hardness is maintained at ≤201 HBW (≤92 HRB). While elevated-temperature strength is similar to other 18-8 austenitic grades, 310S maintains its structural integrity at temperatures where conventional stainless steels experience rapid creep deformation and oxide scale breakdown. The material offers creep strength of approximately 140 MPa at 1000 deg C.
4.Dimensional Precision and Surface Quality
Thickness tolerances per ASTM A480: for 6.0-10.0 mm, ±0.30-0.50 mm; for 10.0-20.0 mm, ±0.50-0.80 mm. Width tolerance: +3.0 mm / -0 mm for widths up to 1500 mm; +4.0 mm / -0 mm for widths 1500-3000 mm. Flatness tolerances per ASTM A480 for hot rolled plates, with standard flatness ≤5 mm per 2 m (stretcher leveled if required). The annealed and pickled surface is free from scale, cracks, laminations, and other surface defects, ensuring reliable fabrication and consistent performance.
c. Applications and Industry Solutions
Petrochemical and Chemical Processing – Widely used in ethylene cracking tubes, reformer furnace tubes, pyrolysis systems, and hydrocarbon processing equipment. The material's resistance to carburization and sulfidation makes it indispensable in environments where carbon deposition and sulfur attack are prevalent.
Industrial Furnaces and Heat Treatment – Applied in furnace linings, radiant tubes, muffles, retorts, annealing covers, combustion tubes, firebox sheets, burner components, and thermocouple protection tubes. 310S performs reliably in continuous service up to 1150 deg C, far exceeding the capabilities of 304 or 309 grades.
Power Generation and Boilers – Used in boiler baffles, superheater supports, gas turbine components, and thermal processing equipment. The alloy's oxidation resistance and creep strength are essential for components subjected to high-temperature flue gases and thermal cycling.
Heat Exchangers and Thermal Equipment – Fabricated into high-temperature heat exchangers, recuperators, radiant tube heaters, and expansion bellows. The material's thermal conductivity (14.2 W/m·K at 100 deg C) and thermal expansion characteristics (16.5 x 10^-6 per deg C at 20-100 deg C) are well-suited for heat transfer applications.
Automotive and Aerospace – Found in exhaust systems, manifolds, and high-temperature engine components. The material's non-magnetic properties and oxidation resistance make it suitable for demanding under-hood and exhaust applications.
Food Processing and Cryogenic – While primarily a high-temperature grade, 310S also performs well in cryogenic applications due to its austenitic structure and toughness at low temperatures.
