Klein Sandostab 4030 - An efficient heterogeneous nucleating agent for semi-crystalline polymers
1. Product Introduction
Sandostab 4030 is an efficient non-homogeneous nucleating agent for various semi-crystalline polymers. It is particularly suitable for polyolefins, polyesters, nylon, polyoxymethylene or thermoplastic polyurethanes.
Sandostab 4030 increases the production per unit time during injection molding or blow molding by raising the crystallization temperature and/or crystallization speed. The mechanical properties of the final product, such as tensile strength, are significantly improved. At the same time, during the controlled crystallization process, due to the formation of smaller and more uniform spherical crystals, warpage is reduced. It also helps with optical properties such as gloss. At low addition levels, it can improve the transparency of the polymer.
Sandostab 4030 is chemically inert, thus having no adverse effects with other additives such as processing aids, light stabilizers, or long-lasting heat stabilizers. Due to its superior thermal stability, it does not restrict the original processing conditions of plastics. Due to its good insolubility in the polymer matrix, it does not cause the products to fog or powder. Sandostab 4030 does not melt during the processing, but it is easily dispersed in the polymer melt under common extrusion conditions.

Solubility at 20°C: Does not dissolve in water and general organic solvents (decomposes in strong acids and strong bases).

Thermal stability (DSC): 380°C
Storage stability: Stable in a sealed container, insensitive to heat or moisture.
4. Application examples
The effect of this non-homogeneous nucleating agent is illustrated by the homopolymer and copolymer of polypropylene through certain important parameters and their relationship with concentration. Since these results are related to the type of polymer and further depend on the common stabilizers, the effect of Sandostab 4030 should be tested for each specific application. To ensure the good effect of Sandostab 4030, it should be uniformly dispersed in the polymer melt. The commonly recommended dosage is 0.05-0.3 phr, but it should be adopted for each specific application.
5. Increase in crystallization temperature
Crystallization temperature is a decisive parameter determining the output in injection or blow molding applications. Increasing the crystallization temperature can shorten the cycle time and thus improve mechanical and overall speed. Sandostab 4030 has a significant effect on the initial crystallization temperature (COT) of polypropylene and is effective even at low concentrations. Typical addition amount is 0.1-0.3 phr, which has excellent results in most applications.
6. Effect on crystallinity
In addition to the initial crystallization temperature, crystallinity is also affected by Sandostab 4030. For homopolymer polypropylene, the crystallinity has significantly increased with a small addition of Sandostab 4030 (0.05 phr), and for copolymer polypropylene, it remains almost constant at a Sandostab 4030 concentration of 0.4 phr. Crystallinity is a parameter proportional to the crystallization enthalpy SCE.
7. Effect on mechanical properties (tensile strength)
A small addition of Sandostab 4030 (0.05 phr) to homopolymer polypropylene has shown a significant increase in its tensile strength, and it remains almost constant within the tested concentration range. The effect in copolymer polypropylene is not as good as expected at a concentration of 0.4 phr, but it becomes very obvious when the concentration exceeds 0.4 phr. These trends show a clear correlation with the crystallinity of the polymer.
8. Improvement of surface hardness
The increase in micro-crystallinity in plastics leads to significant surface hardness. This can be confirmed by testing the surface hardness of a 3mm thick injection sample of polypropylene.
9. Transparency
Sandostab 4030 can improve transparency, especially for homopolymer polypropylene. This effect is counteracted by its non-homogeneity when the concentration is above 0.3 phr. In copolymerized polypropylene, its transparency is inherently better than that of homopolymer polypropylene. Sandostab 4030 has no effect on transparency. Contrary to the benzene-sodium nucleating agent, transparency is not negatively affected by the presence of stearic acid calcium.
10. Increase surface gloss
In many formulations containing pigments or fillers, adding Sandostab 4030 can increase the surface gloss of the plastic. This can be indicated by the change in surface gloss in the following PP injection molded sheets containing pigments.
11. Impact on processing stability
When the addition amount is within the range of 0.05 - 0.5 phr, Sandostab 4030 has no effect on the melt flow of copolymerized polypropylene and homopolymer polypropylene. Due to its white pigment properties, it can improve color stability, that is, reduce the yellowness index.
12. Storage and operation
It is recommended to store this product in a sealed container in a cool, dry environment.
According to good industrial operation practices, this product must be handled carefully. Dust should be avoided from being raised, or direct contact with skin, eyes and clothes should be avoided. Ensure good ventilation and keep away from fire sources.
