As the name suggests, “ultra-fine coaxial cable” refers to a miniaturized coaxial cable with a diameter typically around 0.3 mm or 0.5 mm, or even thinner; it retains the typical coaxial structure: a central conductor, insulating dielectric, outer shielding layer, and jacket. Despite its small size, it offers exceptional performance. Compared to traditional LVDS flat cables, the main advantages of micro coax include:

H2e586f8a54be45228747f202884570b3XH7a38201fe21843c0ac34425104ae367cyHf0ad16748b8948d8bd0cf51a6b2c0c8bW

2.1. Better shielding performance: Each wire has an independent shielding layer, which maximizes the suppression of external electromagnetic interference.

2.2. High impedance consistency: Characteristic impedance is easy to control, which is critical for high-speed differential signals.

2.3 Lower high-frequency loss: It offers better signal integrity for high-speed signals.

2.4 Excellent flexibility and compact footprint: With a small wire gauge and strong bending performance, it is ideal for routing in confined spaces or folded structures.

In other words, as products demand increasingly higher signal bandwidth, stability, and EMC compliance, micro coax actually provides a more “reliable” solution.

III. Why More and More Products Are Switching to It

3.1. Demand for Higher Data Rates:

With the widespread adoption of 4K/8K displays, AI cameras, and VR devices, signal bandwidth requirements are skyrocketing. Traditional LVDS flex cables suffer from severe crosstalk and attenuation at high frequencies, whereas the structure of micro coax allows it to easily support higher transmission rates.

3.2. Increasingly Strict EMI/EMC Requirements:

Sectors such as automotive electronics, industrial control, and AI servers have extremely stringent requirements for electromagnetic interference. Coaxial cables inherently offer superior shielding—each signal line is effectively enclosed in a “metal barrel,” making it virtually immune to external interference and preventing it from interfering with other devices.

3.3. Space constraints in structural design:

Modern devices are becoming increasingly slim and lightweight, such as foldable phones, VR headsets, and ultra-thin laptops, where space is limited and there are many bends. Flat ribbon cables are prone to kinking or generating interference in such environments, whereas micro-coax cables, with their superior flexibility and smaller size, are better suited for these high-density layouts.

3.4. Superior Signal Synchronization and Consistency:

With traditional LVDS flex cables, it is difficult to ensure complete consistency in length and impedance between signal pairs, which can easily cause skew (timing deviation). The uniform structure and consistent shielding of micro-coax cable assemblies allow each set of signals to “arrive simultaneously,” significantly reducing the bit error rate.

3.5. Mature Manufacturing and Connector Technologies:

In the past, micro-coax was costly and difficult to manufacture, but now connector manufacturers (such as I-PEX and Hirose) have introduced mature, compact interface solutions. Coupled with the widespread adoption of mass production and automated crimping technologies, the cost and reliability of micro-coax have improved significantly.
