Flat Steel Product Detailed Specification
1. Product Definition
Flat steel, also known as flat iron, is a long steel product with a rectangular cross-section and slightly rounded edges, belonging to the simple section section steel with a width-to-thickness ratio generally greater than 3. According to national standards, it features a width of 12-300mm, a thickness of 3-60mm, and conventional lengths of 6m/9m/12m. Custom fixed-length processing is available.
2. Production Process
2.1 Hot Rolled Flat Steel (Mainstream)
- Process: Steel billets are heated to 1200-1250℃, then rolled through multiple rolling mills, cooled and sheared into finished products.
- Features: High strength, good toughness and cost-effective; with black oxide surface and medium dimensional accuracy.
- Execution Standards: GB/T 704-2017, YB/T 4212-2010.
2.2 Cold Drawn Flat Steel
- Process: Hot rolled blanks are cold-drawn at room temperature, followed by straightening and polishing treatment.
- Features: Smooth surface (Ra≤3.2μm), high dimensional accuracy and good straightness; slightly lower strength than hot-rolled products with higher cost.
2.3 Forged Flat Steel
- Process: Formed by high-temperature forging with dense internal structure.
- Features: Ultra-high strength and excellent impact resistance; high cost, suitable for heavy-duty and special working conditions.
3. Material Classification and Properties
3.1 Carbon Structural Steel (Most Commonly Used)
- Q235B: Yield strength ≥235MPa, tensile strength 375-500MPa; high cost performance, widely used in buildings, supports and guardrails.
- Q355B/D (Q345): Low-alloy high-strength steel with yield strength ≥355MPa; low temperature resistance and impact resistance, applicable to bridges, machinery and vehicles.
- 45# Steel: High-quality carbon steel with high strength and hardness; used for mechanical parts, shaft parts and mold blanks.
3.2 Alloy Structural Steel
- 40Cr/42CrMo: Added with Cr and Mo elements, featuring high strength, wear resistance and good hardenability; applied to gears, connecting rods and high-strength bolts.
3.3 Spring Flat Steel
- 65Mn/60Si2Mn: High elasticity and fatigue resistance, used for automobile leaf springs and spring fixtures.

4.1 Specification Representation
- Standard Format: Width × Thickness × Length (mm), e.g. 50×5×6000.
- Theoretical Weight (kg/m) ≈ Width(mm) × Thickness(mm) × 0.00785.

- Small Size: 12×3, 16×4, 20×5, 25×6
- Medium Size: 30×6, 40×5, 50×8, 60×10
- Large Size: 80×10, 100×12, 120×15, 150×20
5. Product Features
1. Regular Cross-section: Vertical two sides with clear edges and no obvious burrs.
2. High Dimensional Accuracy: Strict tolerance, better three-point difference and single-bar difference than steel plate standards with good straightness.
3. Excellent Surface Quality: Hot-rolled black surface / cold-drawn smooth surface, free from cracks, folds, scabs and other defects.
4. High Utilization Rate: Manufactured by negative deviation rolling and delivered by actual weight, with 1-3% higher utilization rate than steel plates.
5. Good Machinability: Easy for cutting, welding, bending and drilling, compatible with various processing technologies.
6. Main Applications
1. Construction Engineering: Steel structure connecting plates, embedded parts, stair handrails, supports, fences and roof structural parts.
2. Mechanical Manufacturing: Guide rails, base plates, gear blanks, flanges, tool fixtures and spring parts.
3. Transportation Vehicles: Automobile chassis, trailer beams, train carriage connectors and bridge load-bearing structures.
4. Electric Power & Municipal Engineering: Cable trays, pole cross arms, street lamp supports and manhole cover frames.
5. Other Fields: Welded pipe blanks, sheet rolling blanks, shipbuilding and chemical equipment.
7. Surface Treatment and Delivery Status
7.1 Surface Treatment
- Hot Rolled Black Surface: Natural oxide layer with the lowest cost, the first choice for general structural parts.
- Cold Drawn Smooth Surface: High smoothness, no secondary processing required, suitable for precision parts.
- Galvanization (Hot-dip / Cold-dip): Rust and corrosion resistant, applicable to outdoor and humid environments.
7.2 Delivery Status
- Hot rolled flat steel: Delivered in hot rolled state without heat treatment.
- Cold drawn flat steel: Cold-drawn and straightened, annealing is available to improve plasticity.
8. Packaging & Delivery
- Packaging: Bundled packing with 2-5 tons per bundle. Both ends are marked with labels indicating specifications, material, batch number and weight.
- Delivery: Shipped from Tianjin Port with a 5-7 days delivery cycle. Full container and LCL shipping are supported, compatible with T/T payment terms (30% advance payment + 70% balance payment).
9. Quality Standards & Inspection
1. Execution Standards: GB/T 704-2017, YB/T 4212-2010; Q235B complies with GB/T 700, Q355B complies with GB/T 1591.
2. Inspection Items: Dimensional tolerance, surface quality, mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), chemical composition and packaging identification.
