Boiler Plate Detailed Product Specification

1. Product Overview

Boiler plate is a special pressure-bearing steel sheet exclusively used for boilers and pressure vessels. It is manufactured via killed steel smelting, controlled rolling or normalizing heat treatment in accordance with domestic and international codes for pressure equipment. Featuring outstanding high-temperature resistance, high-pressure resistance, favorable low-temperature impact toughness and superior weldability, it serves as core raw material for pressure-bearing components in thermal power, petrochemical, oil & gas and central heating industries.

2. Applicable Standards

Domestic Chinese Standard

GB 713-2014 Steel Plates for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Service, the current mandatory national standard replacing old GB713-2008 and traditional grades 20G & 16MnG.Common grades: Q245R, Q345R, Q370R, 15CrMoR, 12Cr1MoVR, 13MnNiMoR. (Former grade 20G corresponds to Q245R; former 16MnG corresponds to Q345R)

International Standards for Export

  • EN Standard (EU): EN10028 series, including P265GH, P355GH, 16Mo3 (compliant with EU PED certification for pressure equipment)

  • ASTM/ASME (USA): SA516 Gr60/Gr70, SA387 Gr11/Gr22

3. Grade Classification, Chemical Composition & Mechanical Properties

Carbon Steel Boiler Plate (for medium & low pressure ≤450℃, most widely used)

Q245R (replaced original 20G)

Chemical Composition (wt%): C≤0.20, Si 0.15~0.55, Mn 0.90~1.50, P≤0.025, S≤0.015Mechanical Properties: Yield strength ≥245MPa, Tensile strength 400~530MPa, Elongation ≥25%, Charpy V-notch impact energy ≥34J at -20℃. Continuous service temperature ≤450℃, applicable for low-pressure boiler drums and steam distributors.

Q345R (replaced original 16MnG)

Chemical Composition: C≤0.20, Si 0.15~0.55, Mn 1.20~1.60, P≤0.025, S≤0.015Mechanical Properties: Yield ≥345MPa, Tensile 510~655MPa, Elongation ≥21%, qualified for low-temperature impact test at -40℃. Usable temperature range: -40℃ ~ 450℃, the dominant domestic boiler plate grade for industrial boilers and storage tanks.

Q370R

C≤0.18, Mn 1.20~1.70; Yield ≥370MPa, Tensile 530~640MPa, dedicated for medium & high pressure pressure vessels.

Low Alloy Heat-resistant Boiler Plate (High pressure & high temperature 480~550℃)

  1. 15CrMoR / 12Cr1MoVR: Cr-Mo alloy heat-resistant steel with chromium & molybdenum added, maximum long-term service temperature up to 550℃, applied for power station superheaters and high-temperature headers.

  2. 16Mo3 (EN Standard): per EN10028, Mo content 0.25~0.35%, excellent creep resistance, long-term working temp up to 525℃, standard boiler material for EU export.

  3. P265GH (EN Standard): Minimum yield strength ≥265MPa, universal for normal-pressure boilers and heat exchangers in Europe, equivalent to Q245R material system in China.

4. Dimension Specification

  1. Thickness range: 6mm ~ 150mm; extra heavy plate 150~300mm available upon customized rolling requirement.

  2. Width options: 1500/1800/2000/2200mm; Length: 6000~12000mm, customized fixed-length cutting acceptable.

  3. Thickness tolerance complies with Grade B national standard; surface treatment like sandblasting, rust removal and anti-rust painting can be arranged as per customer request.

5. Production Process & Delivery Condition

  1. Smelting: Fully killed steel with ladle refining to strictly control harmful impurities of sulfur and phosphorus, reducing cold brittleness and hot brittleness defects.

  2. Rolling: Main delivery status is hot rolled (HR); thin plates can be normalized (N), heavy plates adopt normalized & tempered (N+T) delivery.

  3. Factory Inspection Items: Tensile test, Charpy low-temperature impact test, cold bending test, UT ultrasonic flaw detection (Grade I / Grade II optional), full chemical composition inspection and surface visual check. Original Mill Test Certificate (MTC) and relevant certification documents are supplied; PED and ship survey certification available for export orders.

6. Product Advantages

  1. Outstanding high temperature & pressure resistance: Carbon grades stably serve below 450℃, Cr-Mo alloy grades keep stable metallographic structure up to 550℃ without creep deformation or cracking.

  2. Superior low-temperature toughness: Q345R can work steadily at -40℃, suitable for pressure vessels and cryogenic storage tanks used in frigid regions.

  3. Excellent forming & welding performance: Low carbon equivalent, compatible with SMAW, GMAW and SAW without post-weld cracking; easy for bending and rolling processing.

  4. High steel purity: Sulfur and phosphorus content far below ordinary carbon steel plate, high pass rate of ultrasonic inspection with high safety factor for pressure-bearing usage complying with pressure vessel codes.

  2. Delivered by truck for inland transport or bulk ship/container for sea freight; blanking and flattening processing available before delivery as customer’s requirement.
