Product Specification of Pressure Vessel Steel Plate
1. Product Overview
Pressure Vessel Steel Plate is a special medium & heavy steel plate manufactured for pressure-bearing equipment in accordance with dedicated national standards. Compared with ordinary structural steel plates, it features strictly controlled harmful impurities of sulfur & phosphorus, guaranteed low-temperature impact toughness, excellent weldability and internal ultrasonic inspection. Designed for manufacturing hermetic pressure vessel shells, the product can serve safely for long-term service under high temperature, low temperature, high pressure and acid-base corrosive working conditions.
Executive Standards: Domestic standard GB/T713-2023 Steel Plates for Boiler and Pressure Vessel, GB/T3531 Low-temperature Pressure Vessel Steel Plate; International standards including ASME SA516 / SA387 and EN10028 (P265GH / P355GH) for export business.
Grade Code Definition: R = for pressure vessel service; DR = for low-temperature pressure vessel; R-HIC = HIC-resistant grade against hydrogen-induced cracking.
2. Main Steel Grade Classification (Classified by Operating Temperature & Material)
2.1 Normal-temperature Carbon & Low-alloy Vessel Plate (-20℃ ~ 475℃, General Purpose)
Q245R (Former Grade 20R): Carbon steel for medium & low-pressure vessels, maximum working temperature ≤425℃. Widely used for atmospheric storage tanks, chilled water tanks, low-pressure heat exchangers and small gas storage vessels.
Q345R (Former Grade 16MnR): Dominant low-alloy vessel grade for domestic market, working range -20℃~475℃, applicable for pressure equipment below 5MPa including chemical reactors, oil & gas storage tanks, boiler drums and spherical tanks. Variant Q345R(R-HIC) resists hydrogen sulfide corrosion for sour crude & petrochemical facilities.
Q370R / Q420R / Q460R: High-strength vessel steel for wall thickness reduction, applied on large high-pressure storage tanks and heavy-duty pressure vessels.
2.2 Cryogenic Vessel Plate (-40℃ ~ -196℃ for cryogenic storage tank)
16MnDR: Designed for -40℃ working condition, for LPG & liquid ammonia storage tanks and cryogenic separation equipment.
09MnNiDR: Ultra-low temperature grade for -70℃ service, for ethylene & propane cryogenic tanks.
9%Ni Steel: Super-low temperature material at -196℃, specially for LNG storage tanks.
2.3 High-temperature Heat-resistant Cr-Mo Vessel Plate (350~600℃ for high-temperature reactor & furnace)
15CrMoR, 14Cr1MoR, 12Cr1MoVR: Chromium-molybdenum heat-resistant alloy steel with outstanding creep resistance at elevated temperature, used for petrochemical hydrogenation reactors, high-temperature boiler barrels and thermal oil reactors.
2.4 International Equivalent Grades (For Export Trade)
ASTM Standard: SA516 Gr60 / Gr65 / Gr70 (equivalent to Q345R), SA387 Gr11 / Gr22 (Cr-Mo heat-resistant plate)
EN Standard: P265GH (equivalent to Q245R), P355GH (equivalent to Q345R), 16Mo3 heat-resistant plate
3. Dimension Specification
Thickness: 6mm ~ 300mm; regular spot stock 8~120mm, extra-heavy plate 120~300mm available upon customized rolling
Width: 1500mm/1800mm/2000mm up to 4000mm
Length: 3000mm ~ 18000mm, customized cut-to-length available by CNC cutting
Tolerance: Thickness negative tolerance ≤0.3mm; flatness & edge straightness superior to regular carbon steel plate standard
4. Chemical Composition (Strict Control on Harmful S & P Impurities)
S ≤0.015% and P ≤0.025% for regular vessel plate; HIC-resistant plate requires S ≤0.003% and P ≤0.015%. Trace aluminum is added for grain refinement to reduce carbon equivalent and avoid welding cracking risk.

5. Mechanical Properties (Mandatory Index per National Standard)
Q245R (Plate thickness ≤16mm)
Yield Strength ≥245MPa, Tensile Strength 400~520MPa, Elongation ≥25%, V-notch impact energy ≥34J at 0℃, 180° cold bend test without crack.
Q345R (Plate thickness ≤16mm)
Yield Strength ≥345MPa, Tensile Strength 510~650MPa, Elongation ≥21%, V-notch impact energy ≥34J at -20℃.
16MnDR
Impact energy ≥47J at -40℃ with excellent anti-brittle fracture performance under cryogenic environment.
Note: Yield strength decreases progressively with plate thickness as specified in standard.
6. Delivery Heat Treatment Status
Hot Rolled / TMCP (Thermo-Mechanical Controlled Process): Main for thin plate ≤16mm with cost advantage
Normalized (N): Mandatory for plate over 16mm to refine grain, eliminate rolling residual stress and improve low-temperature toughness & weldability (Normalization required for thick SA516 Gr70)
Normalized + Tempered (N+T): For plate over 80mm and Cr-Mo heat-resistant grades
Quenched + Tempered (Q+T): Applied on high-strength grades such as Q690DR
7. Production & Quality Inspection Standard
Melting Route: EAF + LF Refining + VD Vacuum Degassing to obtain high-purity molten steel with minimum inclusions
Ultrasonic Test: All products are inspected by UT ultrasonic flaw detection (Grade I / II per GB/T2970) to eliminate internal lamination, blowhole and inner crack, mandatory test for pressure vessel steel (not required for ordinary structural plate)
Surface Quality: Free from surface crack, scab, fold and skin defect; minor surface imperfection can be ground without exceeding thickness tolerance lower limit
