Product Description of Deformed Steel Bar

1. Product Overview

Deformed steel bar is formally named Hot-rolled Ribbed Bar (HRB). Featured with transverse ribs and two longitudinal ribs evenly distributed along the bar length (mostly crescent-shaped ribs), its surface ribs greatly improve bonding force with concrete. As the key load-bearing material for reinforced concrete structures, it is widely applied in residential construction, bridges, road engineering and other civil projects.

2. Applicable Standards

  • Chinese National Standard: GB/T 1499.2-2024 (replaced former GB/T 1499.2-2018)

  • Seismic-grade steel: HRB400E & HRB500E (marked with "E" for special seismic requirements)

  • Fine-grained steel: HRBF400 & HRBF500 (F stands for fine grain with superior low-temperature toughness)

5. Chemical Composition (Typical Value, wt%, HRB400E)

  • Carbon(C):0.20~0.25; Silicon(Si):0.40~0.70; Manganese(Mn):1.20~1.60

  • Trace alloy: Vanadium(V)/Niobium(Nb)/Titanium(Ti) for microalloying to upgrade strength and toughness

  • Impurity control: Phosphorus(P)≤0.045%, Sulfur(S)≤0.045% to guarantee welding property and fatigue resistance

6. Mechanical Properties

  • Yield Strength (ReL): HRB400≥400MPa, HRB500≥500MPa

  • Tensile Strength (Rm): HRB400≥540MPa, HRB500≥630MPa

  • Elongation after fracture(A): ≥16% for HRB400, ≥15% for HRB500

  • Cold bending property: No crack after 180° cold bending (bending diameter d=3a, a=bar nominal diameter)

  • Seismic index for E-grade bar: Strength ratio ≥1.25, yield ratio ≤1.30, total elongation ≥9%

7. Production Process

  1. Steelmaking: Blast furnace ironmaking → Converter/EAF steelmaking → LF refining for composition adjustment and impurity removal

  2. Continuous casting: Protective continuous casting to produce qualified steel billets

  3. Hot rolling: Billets heated at 1100~1200℃ → Rough rolling → Intermediate rolling → Finish rolling → Online quenching → Natural cooling on cooling bed

  4. Finishing: Fixed-length cutting → Straightening → Flaw detection → Bundling → Marking & Warehousing

8. Product Advantages

  1. Strong adhesion: Special rib design improves occlusion with concrete to avoid bar slipping

  2. High strength: HRB400 features about 20% higher strength than HRB335 to save steel consumption and lower project cost

10. Packing, Marking & Delivery Terms

  1. Packing: Bundled packing, 2~5 tons per bundle fastened with steel wire or metal strip to prevent deformation in transit

  2. Marking: Metal tag attached on each bundle marked with grade, dimension, standard, batch No., production date & manufacturer; steel grade mark (such as 4E/HRB400E/mill abbreviation) embossed on bar surface

  3. Delivery status: Hot rolled bare finish; spot goods with standard 9m/12m length; shipment within 5-7 days from Liaocheng, Shandong or Tianjin Port

11. Quality Inspection Standard

  • Appearance inspection: No surface crack, scar or folding; clear rib outline with qualified dimensional tolerance

  • Mechanical test: One sampling group per batch (max.60 tons) for tensile test & cold bend test to meet specification requirement

  • Chemical analysis: Sample per heat for composition test of C,Si,Mn,P,S and alloy elements
