Drive In Pallet Racking is a high-density storage system where forklifts drive directly into the rack structure to load/unload pallets. While selective racking only uses 35-40% of floor space, Drive In achieves 75%+.

3 Failure Cases – When NOT to Use Drive In Racking
Case 1: Shenzhen 3C E-commerce (2000 SKUs, 800 in/out per day)
Problem: Client wanted Drive In for phone accessories, but had 2000 SKUs and very fast turnover (800 in/out per day).
Result: Drive In's LIFO meant popular SKUs got buried at the back of the lane. To retrieve one item, they had to move 5 pallets. Efficiency crashed.
Solution: Switched to Selective Racking + double-deep design. Rented 300sqm extra warehouse, but efficiency tripled.
Lesson: SKU >20 types OR daily in/out >10 per lane → Don't use Drive In.
Case 2: Shanghai Food Importer (Needed FIFO, 3 Shelf Lives)
Problem: Client stored imported chocolate, needed FIFO (first-in-first-out) due to 3 shelf lives (6/9/12 months).
Result: Drive In is LIFO – cannot do FIFO. Client forced it anyway. Early-batch chocolate expired, loss ~$8000.
Solution: Fully switched to Drive Through Racking (drive-through, two-way access, allows FIFO).
Lesson: Need FIFO (food, pharma, batch expiry) → Use Drive Through or Flow Racking. Not Drive In.
Case 3: Guangzhou E-commerce (Seasonal Surge, 5000 SKUs)
Problem: Client's warehouse 40% utilized normally, surged to 120% before Double 11. Wanted Drive In to handle the surge.
Result: Drive In lanes are fixed – cannot add lanes temporarily. Also, high-frequency in/out during Double 11 made LIFO painfully slow.
Solution: Selective Racking + short-term rented warehouse (rent for 2 months before Double 11). More flexible.
Lesson: Seasonal surge + high SKU → Use Selective + temporary warehouse. Not Drive In.

Q1: Drive In vs Double Deep – Which is better?
A: Depends on SKU count and turnover speed.

Q2: Cold storage (-25°C) Drive In – Will bolts break?
A: Yes, standard bolts become brittle at -25°C.
We use hot-dip galvanized bolts with low-temp toughness treatment. Tightening torque is 60N·m (vs 80N·m at ambient). If your previous bolts broke, send us photos – we'll send free replacements.
Q3: Warehouse height 7 meters – Can I do Drive In?
A: Yes, 3 levels possible, but depends on your load height.
If load + pallet >1.8 meters, 3 levels isn't enough. Better to use Selective 4 levels. Send us your warehouse dimensions, we'll calculate.
Q4: Does your quote include installation? I'm in Africa, can't find installers.
A: Quote excludes installation, but we can recommend partner installers (Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa).
Or we can guide installation via video call (Chinese/English), but you need someone who knows how to use electric torque wrenches. Drive In installation is precision work – if it's crooked, you can't fix it later. Recommend using professional installers.
Q5: What lane depth is best for Drive In?
A: Usually 5-8 pallet positions. Don't exceed 12.
Too deep means forklift has to reverse a long way out – slow. Our advice: if warehouse depth >30 meters, do 2 lanes (6-8 positions each) rather than 1 lane of 12. More efficient.
