Cast Pipe Product Specification

Cast pipes are metal pipes manufactured from cast iron or cast steel via centrifugal casting, continuous casting and other processes. They combine the excellent stability and wear resistance of cast iron with the high toughness of steel, and are widely used in municipal water supply & drainage, gas transmission, industrial wear-resistant piping and other fields.

1. Main Classification

1.1 By Material

  • Grey Cast Iron PipeMade of high-carbon cast iron with flake graphite structure. It features tensile strength ≥140MPa, maximum working pressure ≤0.3MPa, relatively high brittleness and low elongation, but outstanding vibration damping and corrosion resistance. Mainly applied to gravity drainage and sewage pipelines in buildings.

  • Ductile Iron PipeProduced by adding magnesium or rare earth magnesium nodulizer into molten iron to form spherical graphite. With tensile strength ≥420MPa, elongation ≥7% and working pressure up to 6MPa, it owns excellent toughness and anti-corrosion performance, featuring "the essence of iron and the performance of steel". It is the preferred choice for municipal water supply, gas, oil transmission and high-pressure industrial pipelines.

  • High Silicon Cast Iron PipePossesses superior resistance to strong corrosive media such as sulfuric acid, specially used for anti-corrosion pipelines in chemical industry.

1.2 By Casting Process

  • Centrifugal Cast Pipe (Mainstream)Molten iron adheres and forms under the centrifugal force of high-speed rotating mould. The finished product has dense structure, uniform wall thickness (tolerance ≤5%), smooth inner wall (Ra3.2–6.3) and few defects.

  • Continuous Cast PipeFormed in one piece by horizontal continuous casting. It boasts high production efficiency and low cost, mostly used for small and medium-diameter grey cast iron pipes.

  • Sand Mold Cast Pipe (Gradually Phased Out)A traditional process with rough surface and numerous defects, only adopted for low-pressure non-critical pipelines.

1.3 By Joint Type

  • Flexible Joint (Type T/N1/X)Sealed with rubber gaskets. It allows a deflection angle of 3° and radial displacement of ±30mm, with good seismic performance and easy installation, which is the most widely used type.

  • Flange JointConnected by flange bolts and sealed with gaskets, suitable for high-pressure industrial pipelines of PN16/PN25.

  • Rigid Socket Joint (Gradually Phased Out)Sealed with cement mortar, prone to leakage and poor earthquake resistance.

1.4 By Specification & Pressure Grade

  • Nominal Diameter: DN80–DN2600mm (ductile iron pipe); DN75–DN1200mm (grey cast iron pipe)

  • Wall Thickness Class: K9 (standard), K10, K12 for ductile iron pipe; LA, A, B for grey cast iron pipe

  • Working Pressure Grade: PN10/PN16/PN25 for water supply; ≤0.3MPa for drainage

2. Production Process (Taking Ductile Iron Pipe as Example)

  1. Molten Iron Preparation: Iron smelting → composition adjustment → spheroidization at 1480°C (holding temperature: 1360–1380°C) → spectral inspection

  2. Centrifugal Casting: Molten iron is poured into water-cooled rotating mould and solidifies under centrifugal force

  3. Finishing Treatment: Annealing → external zinc spraying for anti-corrosion → grinding repair → hydrostatic pressure test → cement mortar lining → external asphalt coating → final inspection

3. Key Performance Parameters

Parameter Grey Cast Iron Pipe Ductile Iron Pipe

4. Applicable Standards & Chemical Composition

  • Executive Standards: GB/T13295-2019 (ductile iron pipe), GB/T12772-2016 (grey cast iron pipe), ISO2531, EN545

  • Chemical Composition of Ductile Iron Pipe: C 3.0%–3.8%, Si 2.0%–2.8%, Mn 0.3%–0.8%, S ≤0.03%, P ≤0.08%, Mg 0.03%–0.06%

5. Application Scope

  1. Municipal Engineering: Urban water supply trunk lines, gas pipelines, rainwater and sewage pipe networks

  2. Building Drainage: Indoor drainage pipes for high-rise buildings, drainage systems in earthquake-prone areas

  3. Industrial Pipeline: Wear-resistant and anti-corrosion pipelines for metallurgy, chemical industry and power plants

  4. Special Environments: Enhanced anti-corrosion type for coastal areas, frost heave resistant type for frozen soil areas, K12 heavy-wall type for roads under heavy load

6. Installation & Maintenance Guidelines

  1. Flexible Joint Installation: Clean the socket → place rubber gasket → lubricate the spigot → push into place → conduct pressure test (1.5 times of working pressure)

  2. Anti-corrosion Maintenance: Repair damaged external zinc coating timely; inspect inner lining regularly and avoid contact with strong acid and alkali

  3. Selection Suggestion: Choose ductile iron pipe for high-pressure and earthquake-prone areas; grey cast iron pipe for gravity drainage; K12 thick-wall pipe for heavy-load sections

7. Advantages & Disadvantages

  • Advantages: High strength, good toughness, pressure resistance, excellent anti-corrosion and seismic performance, easy installation, long service life and cost-effective

  • Disadvantages: Heavier than plastic pipes, higher cost than ordinary grey cast iron pipes, requiring professional installation
