Boiler Plate Product Description

Boiler plate is a special medium and heavy steel plate used for pressure-bearing components of boilers, pressure vessels and pressure equipment. It operates continuously under high temperature, high pressure and alternating loads, featuring excellent high-temperature strength, creep resistance, weldability, low-temperature toughness, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.

1. Applicable Standards

  • National Standard: GB/T 713-2023 (replaces GB 713-2014), thickness range: 3–250 mm

  • International Standards: ASTM A516/A517, ASME SA-516, EN 10028, etc.

2. Common Grades & Chemical Compositions (GB/T 713)

Carbon Steel

  • Q245R: C ≤ 0.20, Mn 0.50–1.00; Applicable temperature ≤ 450℃, for medium and low-pressure boilers and steam drums.

  • Q345R: C ≤ 0.20, Mn 1.20–1.60; Applicable temperature: -20℃ ~ 475℃, for medium and high-pressure vessels and heat exchangers.

Low-alloy Heat-resistant Steel

  • 15CrMoR: Cr 0.80–1.20, Mo 0.25–0.35; Applicable temperature ≤ 550℃, for superheaters and main steam pipelines.

  • 12Cr2Mo1R: Cr 2.00–2.50, Mo 0.90–1.10; Applicable temperature ≤ 580℃, for high-pressure boilers and reactors.

Low-temperature High-strength Steel

  • 13MnNiMoR: Mn 1.20–1.60, Ni 0.60–1.00; Applicable temperature: -40℃ ~ 400℃, for thick-wall high-pressure vessels.

5. Production Process & Heat Treatment

  • Smelting: Electric furnace with LF/VD refining; low sulfur (S ≤ 0.015%) and low phosphorus (P ≤ 0.025%).

  • Rolling: Hot rolling / controlled rolling. Normalizing at 900–950℃, or normalizing plus tempering to refine grain structure and stabilize material properties.

  • Surface Treatment: Sand blasting and derusting with anti-rust paint coated. 100% ultrasonic testing for each plate.

6. Key Characteristics

  1. High-temperature Strength: Maintains stable strength at 350–550℃, with outstanding creep resistance and rupture resistance.

  2. Excellent Weldability: Low carbon equivalent and low cold cracking sensitivity, suitable for arc welding and submerged arc welding.

  3. Superior Low-temperature Toughness: High impact energy at -20℃ (-40℃ optional) to prevent brittle fracture.

  4. Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance: Resists corrosion by water vapor and flue gas, and prevents surface oxidation and peeling under high temperature.

7. Application Scope

  • Power Industry: Steam drums, superheaters, headers and main steam pipelines of utility boilers.

  • Chemical Industry: Reactors, heat exchangers, storage tanks and towers working under medium/high temperature and pressure.

  • Industrial Boilers: Pressure-bearing parts of steam boilers and hot water boilers (operating temperature ≤ 450℃).

  • Nuclear Power & Pressure Vessels: Containment structures, high-pressure storage tanks and thick-wall pressure components.

8. Packaging, Marking & Delivery

  • Packaging: Bundled (2–5 tons per bundle) with wooden supports to avoid deformation.

  • Marking: Steel stamping or spray marking including grade, dimension, heat number, batch number and execution standard.

  • Delivery Condition: Delivered in normalized state. Complete mill test certificate covering chemical composition, mechanical properties, NDT reports and heat treatment records is provided.

9. Selection Recommendations

  • Medium & low pressure (≤4MPa, ≤450℃): Q245R / Q345R are preferred for cost performance.

  • High pressure & high temperature (≥10MPa, 450–550℃): Select 15CrMoR / 12Cr2Mo1R.

  • Thick wall & low temperature (-20℃ ~ -40℃): Select 13MnNiMoR / 16MnDR.
