Detailed Description of Alloy Steel Pipe

1. Product Definition

Alloy steel pipe is a seamless pipe manufactured by hot rolling or cold drawing with carbon steel as the base material, added with alloy elements such as Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Nickel (Ni), Vanadium (V) and Manganese (Mn). It features high strength, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and creep resistance, with superior performance compared with ordinary carbon steel pipes.

2. Main Materials and Chemical Composition

2.1 Common Steel Grades (GB & American Standards)

  • 12Cr1MoVG: Main material for high-pressure boiler pipes, suitable for long-term service under 550℃ with excellent creep resistance.

  • 15CrMoG: Widely used for high-temperature pipelines in petrochemical and power industries, applicable at 450–600℃.

  • 42CrMo: Applied to mechanical structures and high-pressure vessels, featuring high strength and good toughness.

  • Q345 (16Mn): General low-alloy steel for medium and low pressure working conditions.

  • ASTM A335 P11/P12/P22: American standard high-temperature and high-pressure pipes, equivalent to 15CrMo / 12Cr1MoV.

2.2 Functions of Alloy Elements

Element Main Function
Cr (Chromium) Improve oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and hardenability
Mo (Molybdenum) Enhance high-temperature strength, creep resistance and hydrogen corrosion resistance
V (Vanadium) Refine grain structure, strengthen toughness and improve fatigue resistance
Ni (Nickel) Boost low-temperature toughness, acid and alkali resistance and stabilize metallographic structure

3. Product Characteristics

  1. High strength and good toughness: Its strength is 30%–50% higher than carbon steel. The tensile strength ranges from 490MPa to 690MPa, with excellent impact resistance and fatigue resistance, ideal for high-pressure and heavy-load conditions.

  2. High temperature resistance and anti-oxidation: Stable for long-term operation at 500–800℃. A dense chromium oxide film forms on the surface to resist high-temperature oxidation and creep deformation.

  3. Corrosion and wear resistance: Resist acid, alkali, salt spray and hydrogen sulfide corrosion with a corrosion rate lower than 0.01mm per year. High hardness ensures its service life is 2–3 times that of carbon steel pipes.

  4. Excellent machinability: It can be cold bent, hot rolled and welded. It maintains high strength after heat treatment with low cracking risk.

  5. 100% recyclable: Compliant with environmental protection requirements and helps reduce the overall life-cycle cost.

4. Specifications

4.1 Dimension Range

  • Outer Diameter: 10–630 mm (main specification for seamless pipes)

  • Wall Thickness: 2–100 mm (heavy-wall pipe: wall thickness ≥6 mm or wall thickness / outer diameter ≥0.1)

  • Length: 4–12 m (custom fixed length or multiple length available)

4.2 Executive Standards

  • National Standard (GB): GB/T8162 (Structural Pipe), GB/T8163 (Fluid Pipe), GB5310 (High-pressure Boiler Pipe), GB9948 (Petrochemical Pipe)

  • American Standard: ASTM A335 (High-temperature Pipe), ASME SA210/SA213 (Boiler Pipe)

  • European Standard: EN10216 (Pressure Pipe), DIN17175 (Boiler Pipe)

5. Production Process

  1. Steel Smelting: Steelmaking via electric furnace or converter, precisely proportion alloy elements and conduct vacuum degassing for purification.

  2. Pipe Billet Making: Produce continuous casting or forged round billets and inspect for internal defects.

  3. Piercing: Heat round billets to 1100–1250℃ and roll to form hollow pipe shells.

  4. Rolling & Drawing: Process by hot rolling or cold drawing to reach finished size with controlled dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

  5. Heat Treatment: Conduct annealing, normalizing or quenching & tempering to optimize metallographic structure and mechanical properties.

  6. Finishing: Straightening, cutting, non-destructive testing, hydrostatic test and anti-rust treatment.

6. Application Fields

  1. Power & Boiler Industry: Superheaters, reheaters and economizers of high-pressure boilers for working conditions above 550℃ and 10MPa.

  2. Petrochemical Industry: High-temperature and high-pressure reactors, hydrogenation units and oil/gas transmission pipelines, resistant to hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen corrosion.

  3. Mechanical Manufacturing: High-pressure oil cylinders, bearings, gears, shafts and other high-strength structural parts.

  4. Energy & Nuclear Power: Main pipelines of nuclear power plants, steam generators and geothermal transmission pipes.

  5. Aerospace Industry: High-temperature structural components and hydraulic pipelines requiring light weight and high strength.

7. Quality Inspection

  • Chemical Composition Test: Spectroscopic analysis to guarantee qualified alloy content.

  • Mechanical Property Test: Tensile test, impact test and hardness test.

  • Non-destructive Testing (NDT): Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) to detect internal and surface defects.

  • Hydrostatic Test: Conduct pressure test at 1.5–2.5 times the design pressure with no leakage allowed.

  • Dimensional Inspection: Check outer diameter, wall thickness, ovality and overall length.

8. Packaging & Delivery

  • Packaging: Coated with anti-rust oil or black paint, bundled with steel strips or woven bags. Both pipe ends are sealed to prevent dirt ingress.

  • Delivery: Material certificates, inspection reports and product certifications are delivered together with goods.

9. Selection Guide

  • High temperature & high pressure (≥450℃ / ≥9.8MPa): Choose 12Cr1MoVG, 15CrMoG or A335 P22.

  • Medium temperature & medium pressure (300–450℃ / 3–9.8MPa): Choose 15CrMo, Q345 or A335 P12.

  • Low temperature & anti-corrosion requirement: Select nickel-containing grades such as 12Cr2Mo or stainless steel composite pipes.
