Tungsten Carbide Drill Bits

Tungsten carbide drill bits are mainly made of tungsten carbide (WC) with cobalt (Co) as binder via powder metallurgy process. They feature ultra-high hardness, excellent wear resistance and heat resistance, ideal for drilling hard materials and machining high-precision holes, widely used in CNC machining, mold manufacturing, auto parts, aerospace and other industries.

1. Core Performance (vs HSS Drill Bits)

  • Hardness: HRA 90–93 (equivalent to HRC 78–82), capable of drilling hardened steel up to HRC 60+

  • Service Life: 5–10 times longer than HSS bits, cost-effective for mass production

  • Heat Resistance: Maintain cutting performance at 800–1000℃, suitable for high-speed machining

  • Precision: High rigidity with low runout, ensuring high hole accuracy and smooth finish, mostly no secondary finishing needed

  • Drawbacks: High brittleness, vulnerable to impact; strict requirements on machine tools and clamping; higher cost, professional grinding equipment required for resharpening

2. Main Types & Features

Solid Tungsten Carbide Drill Bits (Most Popular)

Integrally made of carbide with fine-grain material and TiAlN coating.Advantages: supreme rigidity, good self-centering, high precision and smooth chip removal, fit for deep hole and precision machining.Application: CNC machining centers, high-speed machine tools; carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, cast iron, etc.

Brazed Carbide Drill Bits

Steel body welded with carbide cutting head, balancing toughness and hardness.Advantages: lower cost than solid carbide bits, good rigidity, optional internal cooling.Application: medium-load stable cutting; steel, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.

Replaceable Head Drill Bits

Steel drill body with interchangeable carbide heads for repeated use of shank.Advantages: low long-term cost, quick head replacement, precision close to brazed type.Application: large-batch fixed-diameter drilling; CNC machining centers and lathes.

Indexable Insert Drill Bits

Steel holder fitted with indexable carbide inserts, directly replace worn inserts.Advantages: economical, fast tool change, wide applicable aperture range (2D–5D).Application: lathes and general machine tools; rough machining of mild steel, cast iron and aluminum.

3. Key Parameters & Selection Guide

  • Point Angle: Standard 118° for general use; 135° for stainless steel & hard materials for better centering

  • Helix Angle: 30°–35° for common steel; 40°–45° for aluminum & copper for better chip removal; 15°–20° for hard materials to enhance rigidity

  • Coatings: TiN (golden, wear-resistant); TiAlN (purple-black, heat-resistant, preferred choice); AlTiN (super-hard, high temperature resistance)

  • Cooling Mode: Internal cooling is preferred to deliver coolant directly to cutting area and prevent edge chipping; sufficient external coolant flow is necessary if internal cooling is unavailable

  • Clamping Requirement: Total runout ≤0.02mm, ≤0.01mm for small diameter bits; hydraulic or heat-shrink tool holders are recommended

4. Applicable Materials & Machining Scope

✅ Recommended materials: carbon steel, alloy steel, mold steel, hardened steel (HRC 50–68), stainless steel, cast iron, ductile iron, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy❌ Not recommended: pure copper (easy to cause built-up edge), soft wood, plastic (easy thermal melting), working conditions with severe impact load such as hand-held electric hammers

5. Operation Tips (Prevent Edge Chipping & Extend Service Life)

  1. Adopt high-rigidity machine tools and high rotating speed (≥8000rpm), avoid outdated equipment

  2. Speed & feed rate: low speed & medium feed for hard/hardened steel; high speed & large feed for aluminum and mild steel

  3. Keep flute unobstructed for smooth chip removal; retract drill bit to remove chips when drilling holes deeper than 3 times diameter

  4. Resharpen worn bits with professional tools instead of manual grinding to avoid edge damage

6. Performance Comparison Chart

Properties Tungsten Carbide Drill Bit HSS Drill Bit
Hardness HRA 90–93 HRC 62–68
Service Life Long Short
Applicable Speed High (8000–30000rpm) Low (≤3000rpm)
Price Higher Economical
Toughness Poor, impact-sensitive Good

7. Common Specifications

  • Diameter: 1–20mm (common size), max up to 50mm

  • Shank Type: straight shank (≤12mm), taper shank (≥12mm), internal cooling shank

  • Length: standard length (3D–5D), extended length (8D–15D for deep holes), short length (1.5D for high rigidity)
