Detailed Specification of H-Beam

H-beam is a high-efficiency economical section steel with H-shaped cross section, composed of parallel flanges and vertical webs. Featuring reasonable strength-to-weight ratio and excellent mechanical properties, it is widely used as main load-bearing components such as steel structure beams, columns, bridges and supports, serving as the primary profile for modern steel structures.

1. Product Definition & Structural Composition

1.1 Core Definition

Full name of H-beam is H-section steel, also known as wide-flange I-beam and parallel flange I-beam. With H-shaped cross section, its materials are concentrated on flanges for bending resistance and webs for shear resistance, owning much higher section utilization rate than ordinary I-beams.

1.2 Structural Division (Section Parameters)

  • Flange: The upper and lower horizontal parts bearing bending stress, including flange width (B), flange thickness (t₂) and inner fillet radius (r).

  • Web: The middle vertical part connecting two flanges to resist shear force, including section height (H) and web thickness (t₁).

1.3 Difference from Ordinary I-beam

Ordinary I-beam has inclined inner flange surface with narrow and thick flange; while H-beam features parallel inner and outer flange surfaces with wide and thin flange, realizing more uniform stress bearing and better lateral stability.

2. Product Classification & Specifications

2.1 Classification by Flange Width (Main Hot Rolled Type)

  • HW (Wide Flange H-Beam): Height is close to width, such as HW100×100, HW400×400. Application: steel columns, stiffened columns and frame columns.

  • HM (Medium Flange H-Beam): Height-width ratio ranges from 1.33 to 1.75, such as HM250×175, HM488×300. Application: factory building frame beams and columns, equipment platforms.

  • HN (Narrow Flange H-Beam): Height-width ratio is no less than 2, such as HN200×100, HN350×175. Application: beams, purlins and floor beams.

2.2 Classification by Production Process

  • Hot Rolled H-Beam: Integrally formed by high temperature rolling of steel billets, with standard specifications, stable performance and low cost. Executive Standard: GB/T 11263-2017.

  • Welded H-Beam: Assembled by submerged arc welding of three steel plates including flanges and web, available for customized super-large and non-standard sections. Executive Standard: GB/T 33814-2017.

2.3 Specification Marking & Common Models

  • Marking Method: Height × Width × Web Thickness × Flange Thickness (mm), e.g. H300×300×10×15

  • Common Hot Rolled Specifications

Model H×B (mm) t₁ (mm) t₂ (mm) Theoretical Weight (kg/m)
HW100×100 100×100 6 8 16.9
HM250×175 244×175 7 11 44.1
HN350×175 350×175 7 11 49.4
HW400×400 400×400 13 21 172

3. Material Grade & Executive Standards

3.1 Main Material Grades & Mechanical Properties

  • Q235B: Yield strength ≥235MPa, suitable for light load use at normal temperature, widely used in civil buildings and small & medium-sized factory buildings with high cost performance.

  • Q355B/C/D/E: Yield strength ≥355MPa, applicable for medium and heavy load occasions and low temperature environment (Grade D/E), used for industrial workshops, bridges and high-rise steel structures.

  • Special Materials: Q355NH weathering steel with excellent corrosion resistance, Q420/Q460 high-strength steel for long-span and heavy-load projects.

3.2 Domestic & International Standards

  • China: Hot rolled GB/T 11263-2017, Welded GB/T 33814-2017

  • Europe: EN 10034 (Tolerance), EN 10025 (Material)

  • America: ASTM A992 (Material), W Series (Dimension)

  • Japan: JIS G 3192 (Dimension), JIS G 3101 (Material)

4. Core Advantages

  1. Excellent mechanical performance with strong bending, compression and torsion resistance; wide flange ensures good lateral stability and anti-buckling capacity. Under the same bearing capacity, it is 15%-20% lighter than I-beam.

  2. Economical and efficient, light weight reduces foundation engineering quantity and overall construction cost; dry construction mode is eco-friendly with low noise and short construction period.

  3. Flexible design with complete specifications, available for welding and bolt connection to adapt to complex structures; welded type supports non-standard customized sizes.

  4. Wide application range and superior seismic performance compared with concrete structures.

5. Application Fields

  1. Industrial and civil buildings: frame beams and columns of factory buildings, main structures of high-rise steel buildings, purlins and floor beams

  2. Bridge engineering: deck beams, trusses and load-bearing components for long-span steel bridges

  3. Underground engineering: subway tunnel supports, steel piles and foundation pit enclosure structures

  4. Industrial equipment: petrochemical pipe racks, equipment platforms, furnace frames and heavy machinery supports

  5. Others: offshore oil platforms, power transmission towers, vehicle girders and port terminal structures

6. Surface Treatment & Supply Information

6.1 Surface Treatment

Anti-rust treatment: sand blasting/pill blasting derusting, anti-rust paint coating, hot-dip galvanizing and cold galvanizing.

Deep processing service: fixed-length cutting, drilling, welding and bending as customer requirements.

6.2 Supply Terms

Delivery Time: 5-7 working days for regular sizes

Quality Documents: Mill test certificate, mechanical property report and factory delivery certificate are provided, third-party inspection is supported

7. Installation & Connection Methods

  1. Welding connection: electric arc welding and submerged arc welding, suitable for heavy-load joints with flaw detection available

  2. Bolt connection: Grade 8.8 / 10.9 high-strength bolts, easy installation and detachable, ideal for on-site assembly

  3. Combined connection: combination of welding and bolting to balance structural strength and construction efficiency
