Steel wire is a linear metal product manufactured from hot-rolled wire rods through multiple cold drawing and heat treatment processes. It is mainly round in cross-section, with various special-shaped types available. The diameter ranges widely from 0.01mm to 20mm, serving as a fundamental material in the iron and steel industry. Core Classification (In accordance with GB/T 341-2008)
1. By Chemical Composition (Carbon Content)
Low Carbon Steel Wire (C≤0.25%): Soft and tough, easy for processing. Widely used for binding wire, nail making, wire mesh and packaging.
Medium Carbon Steel Wire (C 0.25%~0.60%): Medium tensile strength, applied for ordinary springs, mechanical parts and shaft components.
High Carbon Steel Wire (C≥0.60%): High strength and high hardness, suitable for string instruments, tire cord, steel wire rope and industrial springs.
Alloy Steel Wire: Containing Cr, Ni, Mo and other alloy elements, including stainless steel wire, bearing steel wire and spring alloy steel wire, applicable to corrosion-resistant, high-temperature resistant and high fatigue working conditions.
2. By Cross Section Shape
Round Steel Wire: The most common type, mainstream diameter: 0.1~10mm.
Special-Shaped Steel Wire: Square, rectangular, flat, triangular, trapezoidal, Z-shape and other profiles, used for special structural parts such as springs, lock cores and conveyor belts.
3. By Diameter Size
Extra Fine: <0.1mm (micro wire, electronic industry usage)
Fine: 0.1~1.5mm
Medium: 1.5~3.0mm
Coarse: 3.0~6.0mm
Extra Coarse: >6.0mm
4. By Surface Treatment
Bright Steel Wire: Non-plated with original metallic luster, for general industrial use.
Galvanized Steel Wire: Hot-dip galvanized (thick zinc layer, superior corrosion resistance, outdoor application); Electro-galvanized (thin zinc layer, high precision, for electronic and daily necessities).
Copper/Nickel/Tin Plated Steel Wire: Improve electrical conductivity and weldability, used for cables and electronic components.
PVC/PE Coated Steel Wire: Outer layer coated with PVC/PE material, featuring insulation, anti-corrosion and wear resistance, ideal for fences and protective nets.
5. By Tensile Strength (MPa)
Low Strength: <390
Normal Strength: 785~1225
High Strength: 1960~3135
Ultra-High Strength: >3135 (prestressed steel wire, aviation special wire)
Manufacturing Process
Raw Material: Hot-rolled wire rod (diameter 5.5~14mm), common grades: Q195, Q235, 45#, 65#, 70#, SWRH72A.
Pickling: Remove surface oxide scale with hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid.
Cold Drawing: Gradual diameter reduction through wire drawing dies at room temperature to enhance strength and surface finish.
Heat Treatment:
Annealing: Soften material and improve ductility (for low carbon steel wire).
Lead Patented / Oil Tempered: Strengthen high carbon steel wire to obtain high tensile strength and toughness (for springs and steel wire ropes).
Surface Treatment: Galvanizing, copper plating, plastic coating and other customized treatments.
Inspection & Packaging: Test mechanical properties, dimension tolerance and surface quality strictly, delivered in coil or straight bar form.
Key Performance Parameters
Diameter Tolerance: Precision wire ±0.01mm, standard wire ±0.1mm.
Tensile Strength: Low carbon wire 300~500MPa, high carbon spring wire 1500~2500MPa.
Elongation: Low carbon wire ≥10%, high carbon wire 3%~8% (higher strength with lower plasticity).
Bending & Torsion Times: Reflect material toughness; nail-making wire ≥10 bending times.
Coating Weight: Hot-dip galvanized ≥200g/㎡, electro-galvanized 5~50g/㎡.

3. High Carbon Spring Steel Wire (65#/70#/SWRH72A)

4. Prestressed Steel Wire
Specification: Φ4.0~7.0mm, strength 1570~1860MPa

Difference Between Steel Wire and Iron Wire
Steel Wire: Carbon content ≥0.0218%, can be strengthened by heat treatment, high strength and good toughness, used for industrial and high-end fields.
Iron Wire: Extremely low carbon content (≤0.0218%), soft texture and low strength, mainly used for nails, paper clips and simple fences.
