Square Pipe (Square Hollow Section, SHS) is a light thin-walled steel product with a hollow square cross-section, also known as cold-formed steel profile, widely used in construction, machinery, municipal engineering and other fields.
1. Product Classification
By Production Process
Welded Square Pipe: Formed by rolling and welding strip steel, low cost, high efficiency (high-frequency welding / arc welding).
Seamless Square Pipe: Formed by hot rolling / cold drawing / extrusion, uniform wall thickness, high strength, suitable for high-pressure and heavy-duty applications.
By Material
Mild Carbon Steel: Q195, Q215, Q235B (general use, cost-effective), SS400.
Low-alloy Steel: Q355B/C/D (high strength, excellent load-bearing), 16Mn, Q390.
By Surface Treatment
Black Square Pipe: Original color, no anti-corrosion treatment, used in indoor dry environments.
Hot-dip Galvanized Square Pipe: Zinc layer ≥ 85μm, salt spray resistance ≥ 1000 hours, preferred for outdoor / coastal use.
Cold-galvanized / Painted: Thin coating, used for decoration and light anti-corrosion.
2. Main Specifications (GB/T 6728-2017)
Specification: Side length × side length × wall thickness (mm), e.g. 50×50×2.0.
Common Sizes:
Small: 10×10 ~ 60×60mm, wall thickness 0.8 ~ 2.5mm (furniture, decoration).
Medium: 60×60 ~ 200×200mm, wall thickness 1.5 ~ 6.0mm (building structures).
Large: 200×200 ~ 500×500mm, wall thickness 6.0 ~ 25mm (bridges, heavy machinery).
Length: Normal 6m / 9m / 12m, custom cutting available.
Tolerance: Wall thickness ≤ 10mm: ±10%; Wall thickness > 10mm: ±8%.
3. Features
Stable Structure: High rigidity, anti-deformation, better bending and torsion resistance than round pipes.
High Strength: Q235B ≥ 370MPa, Q355B ≥ 470MPa.
Cost-effective: Material utilization rate > 95%, low cost for welding / bolting.
Easy Processing: Good performance in cutting, drilling, welding and bending.

Load-bearing Structures: Choose Q355B, thick wall, seamless / high-frequency welded.
Outdoor / Humid Environments: Choose hot-dip galvanized.
Decoration / Light Use: Choose Q235B, thin wall, cold-formed square pipe.
Specification Matching: Select side length and wall thickness according to load, span and connection method.
