Mass Air Flow Sensor
I. Working Principle
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is installed in the intake pipe and primarily measures the volume of air entering the engine. It transmits electrical signals to the ECU, enabling the computer to precisely control fuel injection and ignition.
BMW mainly uses hot-film/hot-wire types:
- The sensor contains a heating element, which maintains a constant temperature when powered.
- Airflow carries away heat, and the computer calculates real-time intake airflow based on the compensation current required.
II. Precautions
- Do not touch the sensing element with bare hands during installation or removal, as oil residue can cause signal inaccuracies and unstable idle.
- Avoid exposure to water or dust, which may trigger fault codes, engine shaking, or increased fuel consumption.
- Never use high-pressure air guns to blow directly inside the sensor, as this may damage the hot film.
- Clean only with specialized cleaners—avoid carburetor cleaners, water, alcohol, etc.
- Ensure the sealing ring is intact and properly installed to prevent air leaks and inaccurate airflow detection.
- Use genuine or compatible replacement parts to avoid fault lights or power loss from inferior components.
- After installation, check if pipe clamps are secure, as leaks or damaged pipes will directly affect measurement accuracy.
