Exhaust camshaft functions:
1. Opens the exhaust valves on time – at the end of the power stroke and the start of the exhaust stroke, the cam lobe lifts the valve so hot burnt gas leaves the cylinder at the correct crank angle.
2. Closes the valves on time – seats them just before the intake stroke begins, preventing back-flow and using exhaust inertia to “scavenge” the chamber for better breathing.
3. Works with the intake cam to create valve overlap – variable valve-timing systems (VVT, Vanos, etc.) adjust exactly when the exhaust valve closes, balancing high-rpm power and low-rpm torque while reducing pumping losses.
4. Drives auxiliary components (on some engines) – powers the high-pressure fuel pump (direct injection), brake-vacuum pump, EGR valve or variable-geometry turbo control shaft, making the camshaft a multi-purpose driver.
5. Shapes exhaust back-pressure and temperature – the cam profile determines gas velocity, back-pressure and how quickly the catalytic converter heats up, influencing emissions, turbo response and fuel economy.
In short: the exhaust camshaft is the timed gatekeeper for exhaust gas; its opening point, lift and duration fix how well the engine breathes, how much power it makes and how clean it runs.
