1. Product Definition
Square billet is a hot-rolled semi-finished steel product with square cross-section produced by continuous casting or mold casting. It serves as the core raw material for finished steel products such as section steel, bar steel, wire rod, etc.
2. Specification Classification (Side Length × Side Length)
• Small Square Billet: 50×50mm, 70×70mm, 80×80mm, 100×100mm, 120×120mm, 130×130mm, 150×150mm, 160×160mm, 180×180mm
• Large Square Billet: 200×200mm, 220×220mm, 250×250mm, 280×280mm, 300×300mm, 350×350mm, 400×400mm, 450×450mm, 500×500mm, 600×600mm
• Length: Fixed length of 3–12m (commonly 6m, 9m, 12m), customizable as per customer requirements
• Section Tolerance: In compliance with GB/T 15574, GB/T 14994 and other standards, side length deviation: ±1–5mm
3. Main Material Grades
• Carbon Structural Steel: Q235B, Q355B (formerly Q235, Q345B), 10#, 20#, 35#, 45#, 55#
• High Strength Low Alloy Steel: Q355C/D/E, Q420, Q460, 16Mn, 15CrMo
• Alloy Structural Steel: 20Cr, 40Cr, 20CrMnTi, 35CrMo, 42CrMo
• High Quality Carbon Steel: 60#, 65#, 70# (spring steel), T8, T10 (tool steel)
• Stainless Steel Billet: 304, 316L, 321, 410, 420 (customized on request)
4. Implementation Standards
National standards: GB/T 15574 (Classification of steel billets), GB/T 14994 (Continuous casting square billet), GB/T 2101 (Acceptance of section steel)
Enterprise standard/agreement: Can be implemented in accordance with customer technical agreements
5. Production Process
1. Hot metal pretreatment → Converter/Electric furnace steelmaking → Refining (LF/VD/RH)
2. Continuous casting (curved continuous casting machine): Casting speed of 0.8–1.8 m/min, dynamic water distribution in secondary cooling, electromagnetic stirring (to improve central segregation)
3. Cutting → Cooling → Finishing → Inspection → Warehousing
6. Appearance and Surface Quality
• Cross-section: Square with natural rounded corners
• Surface: Black skin with iron oxide scale; slight scratches, pits and cracks are allowed (within standard limits)
• End face: Smooth cutting, no burrs, shrinkage cavities or double skins
7. Mechanical Properties (Reference for Q235B)
• Yield Strength ReL ≥ 235 MPa
• Tensile Strength Rm: 375–460 MPa
• Elongation A ≥ 26%
• Normal Temperature Impact Energy Akv ≥ 27 J
8. Main Applications
• Rolling: Square steel, round steel, flat steel, angle steel, channel steel, I-beam, H-beam, steel bar, wire rod
• Forging: Shafts, gears, flanges, molds, mechanical parts
• Further processing: Seamless pipe piercing, steel structural parts, hardware products
9. Packaging, Marking and Transportation
• Packaging: Bulk or bundling (iron wire/steel strip), stacking height ≤ 1.5m
• Marking: Spraying or hanging tags: Material grade, heat number, specification, length, weight, manufacturer
• Transportation: Road, rail and sea transportation; rain-proof, moisture-proof and collision-proof
10. Theoretical Weight (kg/m)
Formula: W = Side Length (mm) × Side Length (mm) × 0.00785
• 100×100mm: 78.5 kg/m
• 150×150mm: 176.6 kg/m
• 200×200mm: 314.0 kg/m
