Steel Strand Product Specification

1. Product Overview

Steel strand is a steel product made by spirally stranding multiple high-strength carbon steel wires and undergoing stabilization treatment. It features high strength, low relaxation, high toughness and good corrosion resistance, widely used in prestressed concrete, bridges, electric power, geotechnical anchorage and other engineering fields.

  • Raw material: High-quality high-carbon steel wire rod (commonly 82B material), carbon content 0.80%~0.85%, cold-drawn into high-precision steel wires.

  • Executive standards: National standard GB/T 5224-2014 (prestressed), YB/T 5004 (galvanized); international standards ASTM A416, BS 5896.

2. Product Classification

2.1 By Structure

  • 1×2 structure: Stranded by 2 wires, used for small anchorage and bundling.

  • 1×3 structure: Stranded by 3 wires, used for light prestressing and electric power guys.

  • 1×7 structure (mainstream): 1 central wire + 6 outer wires, common diameters 9.53mm, 12.7mm, 15.2mm, 17.8mm.

  • 1×19 structure: Stranded by 19 wires, better flexibility, used for long-span stay cables and cable stays.

2.2 By Surface Treatment

  • Uncoated steel strand: No coating, requires post-grouting for corrosion protection, used in conventional prestressed projects.

  • Galvanized steel strand: Hot-dip galvanized coating, strong corrosion resistance, used for electric power ground wires, open-air anchorage and stay cables.

  • Epoxy coated steel strand: Coated with epoxy resin, excellent corrosion resistance, used in coastal, chemical and other high-corrosion environments.

  • Unbonded steel strand: Coated with anti-corrosion grease and HDPE sheath, no grouting required, convenient for construction.

  • Aluminum clad steel strand: Steel wire coated with aluminum layer, combining strength and conductivity, used in transmission lines.

2.3 By Strength Grade

  • Standard strength: 1860MPa, 1960MPa, 2060MPa, 2160MPa.

  • Relaxation grade: Low relaxation (LC, mainstream): 1000h relaxation rate ≤2.5%; Ordinary relaxation: 1000h relaxation rate ≤4.5%.

4. Technical Properties

  1. High strength: Tensile strength is 4~5 times that of ordinary steel bars, effectively reducing component section and saving materials.

  2. Low relaxation: Small stress loss under long-term load, ensuring long-term stability of structural prestress.

  3. High toughness: Elongation ≥3.5%, avoiding brittle fracture and improving structural safety.

  4. Corrosion resistance: Galvanized / epoxy coating can resist atmospheric, groundwater and salt spray corrosion.

  5. Convenient construction: Transported in coils, cut and tensioned on site without straightening, suitable for complex working conditions.

5. Production Process

  1. Raw material treatment: High-carbon steel wire rod → pickling → phosphating → lubricating coating.

  2. Cold drawing: Multi-pass cold drawing to designed wire diameter (4.0~5.5mm).

  3. Stranding: Spirally stranded by stranding machine in 1×7/1×19 structure, controlling lay length and compactness.

  4. Stabilization treatment: Low-temperature tempering at 300~400℃ + tension stretching to eliminate internal stress and improve low relaxation performance.

  5. Surface treatment: Uncoated / hot-dip galvanizing / epoxy coating / unbonded sheath wrapping.

  6. Inspection and packaging: Mechanical property, dimension and coating thickness testing → coiling → moisture-proof packaging → marking and delivery.

6. Applications

  • Construction engineering: High-rise buildings, long-span workshops, prestressed beams and slabs, sleepers, pile foundations.

  • Transportation engineering: Highway / railway bridges, main cables of suspension bridges, stay cables of cable-stayed bridges, box girders.

7. Packaging & Storage

  • Packaging: Wound on steel reels / wooden reels, sealed with outer waterproof cloth and plastic film for moisture and rust prevention.

  • Marking: Each coil is marked with specification, strength, length, batch number, executive standard and production date.

  • Storage: Stored indoors in dry and ventilated conditions, avoiding rain and acid-base corrosion; prevent collision and heavy pressure during transportation.
