Steel Billets – Full Product Details

Steel billets are solid semi-finished products formed by solidification of molten steel from steelmaking furnaces through continuous casting or mold casting. As the core raw material for rolling various steel products (profiles, plates, pipes, etc.), their quality directly determines the performance of subsequent finished steels. Delivery time: 5–7 working days.

1. Product Definition & Production Process

Steel billets are solid steel materials with fixed cross-sectional shapes formed by cooling and solidifying liquid molten steel, serving as a key intermediate product connecting steelmaking and steel rolling in the iron and steel industry chain. The mainstream production process is continuous casting: refined molten steel is poured into a tundish, rapidly solidified in a mold, straightened, cooled, and treated with electromagnetic stirring before being cut to fixed lengths. This process features high production efficiency, uniform internal structure, and excellent surface quality, making it the dominant method in modern steel production.

2. Product Classification

(1) By Cross-sectional Shape

  1. Square BilletSquare cross-section, commonly sized 120×120mm, 150×150mm, 165×165mm, 200×200mm, etc. Mainly used for rolling deformed steel bars, round bars, wire rods, angle steels, channel steels and other section steels.

  2. Rectangular BilletRectangular cross-section, commonly sized 150×330mm, 150×380mm, 150×505mm, 165×380mm, etc. Mostly used for rolling H-beams, I-beams and other large section steels.

  3. SlabWide and flat rectangular cross-section, thickness 165–240mm, width 420–1530mm, length 3700–10000mm. Mainly used for rolling medium and heavy plates, hot-rolled coils, cold-rolled substrates and other flat steel products.

  4. Round BilletCircular cross-section, diameter ranging from 50mm to 800mm, commonly φ150mm, φ200mm, φ380mm, φ450mm, etc. Specially used for rolling seamless steel pipes, shaft forgings and other round steel products.

  5. Shaped BilletSpecial cross-sectional shapes (such as H-shape, I-shape), directly used for rolling corresponding shaped steel products to reduce subsequent processing procedures.

(2) By Material & Steel Grade

  1. Mild Carbon Structural Steel BilletsLow carbon content, cost-effective with good weldability and workability. Typical grades: Q195, Q215, Q235, Q275, SS400, etc. Used in building structures, general mechanical parts, welded components.

  2. High-quality Carbon Structural Steel BilletsStrict composition control, low impurities, balanced strength and toughness. Typical grades: 08Al, 15Mn, 20#, 35#, 45#, 40Mn, 50Mn, etc. Used for manufacturing gears, shafts, connecting rods, molds and other precision mechanical components.

  3. High-strength Low-alloy Steel BilletsAlloyed with Mn, V, Nb and other elements, higher strength than mild steel with good ductility and weldability. Typical grades: Q345 (Q355), Q420, STK500, SS540, etc. Applied in bridges, ships, pressure vessels, engineering machinery, high-rise buildings and other load-bearing structures.

  4. Billets for Deformed Steel BarsSpecially used for producing rebar. Typical grades: HRB400, HRB500, SD390, SD400, etc. Featuring high strength and high elongation to meet seismic and structural requirements in construction.

  5. Special Steel BilletsIncluding alloy structural steel, stainless steel, bearing steel, tool steel, such as 20Cr, 40Cr, GCr15, 304/316 stainless steel billets. Used in high-end equipment, automobiles, aerospace, chemical anti-corrosion and other fields.

(3) By Production Process

  1. Continuously Cast Steel BilletProduced via continuous casting, with dense internal structure, uniform composition and few surface defects. Accounts for over 95% of the market as the mainstream product.

  2. Mold-cast Steel BilletProduced by traditional mold casting, suitable for small-batch, special-sized or high-alloy steel grades, with limited application at present.

3. Product Specifications & Dimensional Tolerances

(1) Square & Rectangular Billets

  • Section size: square billets 120×120mm ~ 200×200mm; rectangular billets 150×330mm ~ 165×505mm

  • Length: 6m, 9m, 12m (custom cut lengths available per customer request)

  • Tolerances: side deviation ±1.0 ~ ±3.0mm; diagonal deviation 3.5 ~ 8.0mm; length deviation ±200mm

(2) Slabs

  • Thickness: 165–240mm, tolerance ±3.0mm
