C级活塞C级活塞环C级活塞01C级活塞环01Main Functions of Mercedes-Benz Piston & Piston Rings

I. Main Functions of the Piston

  • Withstand combustion pressure and transmit powerConvert the thrust generated by fuel mixture combustion and explosion into rotational power via the connecting rod to drive the crankshaft, enabling the engine and vehicle to operate.

  • Seal the combustion chamberWork with piston rings to contain cylinder pressure, ensure compression and explosive force, and prevent gas leakage.

  • Conduct and dissipate heatRapidly transfer high heat from the piston crown to the cylinder wall and coolant, preventing piston melting and cylinder scuffing.

  • Complete the four-stroke cyclePerform reciprocating up-and-down motion to achieve intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes.

II. Main Functions of Piston Rings (Compression Rings + Oil Control Ring)

1. Compression Rings (two upper rings)

  • Cylinder sealing: Prevent high-pressure gas from leaking into the oil pan, maintaining cylinder pressure and engine power.

  • Auxiliary heat dissipation: Transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder wall to lower piston temperature.

  • Partial carbon removal: Reduce carbon deposit buildup in the combustion chamber.

2. Oil Control Ring (one lower ring)

  • Oil scraping: Remove excess engine oil from the cylinder wall and return it to the oil pan, preventing oil burning and blue exhaust smoke.

  • Oil film application: Leave a thin, uniform oil film on the cylinder wall for lubrication and wear reduction.

  • Oil control: Limit oil entry into the combustion chamber to lower oil consumption.
