As a common power transmission device, the chain reduces friction through the "chain" design of the hyperbolic arc. It is used in places with high power and low operating speed and has obvious advantages over belt drives, such as pneumatic compressors.
Types of chain drives
Chains can be divided into transmission chains, lifting chains, and traction chains. Lifting chains and traction chains are used in hoisting and transportation machinery. Transmission chains are widely used in general mechanical transmissions. This chapter only introduces transmission chains. Transmission chains can be further divided into roller chains and toothed chains.
A chain drive consists of a chain and sprockets installed on parallel shafts. It transmits motion and power through the continuous meshing of the chain and the sprocket teeth.
Characteristics of chain drives:
1) Compared with belt drives, there is no elastic sliding, and an accurate average transmission ratio can be maintained. The transmission efficiency is relatively high. The chain does not require a large tension force, so the loads on the shafts and bearings are relatively small. It does not slip, the transmission is reliable, the overload capacity is strong, and it can work well under low-speed and heavy-load conditions.
2) Compared with gear drives, it can have a larger center distance, can work in high-temperature and dusty environments, and the cost is lower.
3) The disadvantages are that the instantaneous chain speed and instantaneous transmission ratio are both variable, the transmission stability is relatively poor, there are shocks and noises during operation, it is not suitable for high-speed applications, and it is not suitable for situations where the rotation direction changes frequently.
