The externally vented pilot-assisted balancing valve is used to control overrunning loads. It allows oil to flow freely in one direction from the directional valve (port 2) to the load port (port 1), while the direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve function can control the flow from port 1 to port 2. The pilot assistance at port 3 reduces the effective setting of the relief function according to the pilot ratio coefficient. Since the spring chamber is connected to the atmosphere, the back pressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting. This valve is also known as a motion control valve or a cross-over center valve.
