Oil filters are divided into full-flow and split-flow types. The full-flow filter is connected in series between the oil pump and the main oil passage, so it can filter all the lubricating oil entering the main oil passage. The split-flow filter is connected in parallel with the main oil passage and only filters part of the lubricating oil sent out by the oil pump.
During the operation of the engine, metal debris, dust, carbon deposits and colloidal precipitates oxidized at high temperatures, water, etc. are continuously mixed into the lubricating oil. The function of the oil filter is to filter out these mechanical impurities and colloids, keep the lubricating oil clean, and extend its service life. The oil filter should have the performance of strong filtering ability, small flow resistance, and long service life. Generally, several filters with different filtering capabilities - strainer, coarse filter, and fine filter - are installed in the lubrication system, which are respectively connected in parallel or in series in the main oil passage. (The one connected in series with the main oil passage is called the full-flow filter, and all the lubricating oil is filtered through the filter when the engine is working; the one connected in parallel is called the split-flow filter). Among them, the coarse filter is connected in series in the main oil passage, which is a full-flow type; the fine filter is connected in parallel in the main oil passage, which is a split-flow type. Nowadays, modern car engines generally only have a strainer and a full-flow oil filter. The coarse filter filters out impurities with a particle size of more than 0.05mm in the oil, and the fine filter is used to filter out fine impurities with a particle size of more than 0.001mm.
Technical Features:
1. Filter paper: The oil filter has higher requirements for the filter paper than the air filter. This is mainly because the temperature of the oil varies from 0 to 300 degrees. Under severe temperature changes, the viscosity of the oil also changes accordingly, which will affect the filtering flow of the oil. The filter paper of a high-quality oil filter should be able to filter impurities under severe temperature changes while ensuring sufficient flow.
2. Rubber seal ring: The seal ring of a high-quality oil filter is made of special synthetic rubber to ensure no oil leakage.
3. Return check valve: Only high-quality oil filters are equipped with it. When the engine is turned off, it can prevent the oil filter from drying out; when the engine is restarted, it immediately generates pressure to supply oil to lubricate the engine. (Also known as the check valve)
4. Relief valve: Only high-quality oil filters are equipped with it. When the external temperature drops to a certain specific value or when the oil filter exceeds its normal service life, the relief valve will open under special pressure, allowing the unfiltered oil to directly flow into the engine. Although the impurities in the oil will enter the engine together, this kind of damage is much smaller compared to the damage caused by the lack of oil in the engine. Therefore, the relief valve is the key to protecting the engine in an emergency. (Also known as the bypass valve)
