Steel wire is an important metal material widely used in industry, construction and agriculture.Steel wire is known for its excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and durability, and has become an indispensable part of modern engineering and production.
The production process of steel wire usually includes multiple steps to ensure that it has ideal strength and stability.
Galvanized steel wire is a uniform zinc layer coated on the surface of steel wire, which is achieved by hot-dipping or electroplating. This zinc coating not only effectively enhances anti-oxidation ability of steel wire, but also significantly extends its service life, especially suitable for using in humid or highly corrosive environments. Galvanized steel wire can be electrogalvanized and hot dip galvanized. Electrogalvanizing is to deposit a layer of zinc on surface of steel wire through electrolysis. The coating is thin and uniform, which is suitable for occasions with requirements for surface finish. Hot-dipping galvanizing is to immerse steel wire in molten zinc liquid, and form a zinc coaitng through high temperature reaction. The coating is thicker and has strong adhesion, and better corrosion resistance. The thickness of zinc layer of hot-dip galvanized steel wire is usually between 40-900g/m2, which can effectively isolate air and moisture and prevent steel wire from rusting.
The production process of Zinc-5%Aluminum mixed Mischmetal alloy-coated steel wire is similar to that of hot-dipping galvanizing, and the coating is completed by immersing in molten alloy. Zn-5Al-MM steel wire is a layer of aluminum-zinc rare earth alloy coated on surface of steel wire. Its corrosion resistance is better than that of single galvanizing, and it can provide long-term protection under more harsh conditions. The corrosion resistance of Zinc-5%Aluminum mixed Mischmetal alloy-coated steel wire is significantly better than that of galvanized steel wire. Aluminum forms a dense aluminum oxide film on surface of coating, which can effectively block invasion of corrosive media. At the same time, zinc acts as a sacrificial anode in the coating to further protect steel wire matrix. Experiments show that under the same environment, corrosion resistance life of Zn-5Al-MM steel wire is 3-8 times that of galvanized steel wire.
From perspective of initial cost, the price of galvanized steel wire is usually 20%-50% lower than that of Zn-5Al-MM steel wire, mainly due to process costs. However, from the perspective of full life cycle costs, the longer service life of galvanized steel wire in corrosive environments often brings better economic benefits. Taking guardrail application in coastal areas as an example, galvanized steel wire may need to be replaced every 5-8 years, while the service life of Zinc-5%Aluminum mixed Mischmetal alloy-coated steel wire can reach more than 15 years, greatly reducing maintenance and replacement costs. When selecting steel wire, it should be reasonably evaluated and purchased according to specific use environment and needs, focusing on the balance between cost performance and product quality to ensure the best performance of the product in actual application.
