How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?The production of Duplex 2507 stainless steel mirrors that of other high-alloy steels. The process kicks off in an electric arc furnace, where scrap steel is melted and alloyed. Once molten, the steel is transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. Here, critical steps such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and gas elimination are meticulously carried out to achieve the desired composition.
During the AOD process, nitrogen is typically incorporated. The steel then progresses to the ladle furnace for fine-tuning of its inclusions, ensuring optimal quality.
Post these initial stages, the molten steel is cast into either solitary ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solidified forms are then reheated and subjected to forging or rolling to attain the specified thickness. A solution annealing heat treatment followed by water quenching ensures a homogeneous internal structure, vital for the steel's integrity.
Fabrication of Duplex 2507 pipes can be executed via hot or cold forming techniques. Hot forming requires temperatures between 1024 °C and 1232 °C, followed by solution annealing at 1052-1125 °C and rapid water quenching. Cold forming methods, such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing, necessitate subsequent heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching, to preserve the material's properties.
Duplex 2507 stainless steel stands out as a super duplex category within the duplex family. Duplex stainless steels feature a microstructure combining ferrite and austenite in nearly equal parts, harnessing the best traits of both phases. This results in high corrosion resistance coupled with strong mechanical strength. Despite the shared attributes, different duplex grades offer varying corrosion resistance levels, contingent on their specific alloy compositions. While duplex steels exhibit excellent resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, their exact performance hinges on the grade and PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number). Super duplex stainless steels, including Duplex 2507, boast a PREN range of 38 to 45, signifying their superior corrosion resistance.
