Duplex 2507 stainless steel is a high-performance super duplex steel renowned for its exceptional strength and superior corrosion resistance. This material boasts a low carbon content (up to 0.03%), along with significant amounts of chromium (~25%), nickel (~7%), and molybdenum (~4%). Engineered for demanding applications, Duplex 2507 is ideal for use in chemical process equipment, the petrochemical industry, and seawater environments. Its robust resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking is unparalleled. Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, this steel excels against pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion.
How Is Duplex 2507 Stainless Steel Made?Manufacturing Duplex 2507 stainless steel follows procedures similar to those of other high-alloy steels. The process begins in an electric arc furnace where scrap steel is melted and alloy elements are introduced. The molten steel is then transferred to an AOD (argon oxygen decarburization) converter. During this critical phase, processes such as decarburization, sulfur refinement, and the removal of dissolved gases take place.
In the AOD process, nitrogen is typically added to the steel. The molten steel then moves to a ladle furnace for inclusion adjustment.
Following these initial steps, the steel is cast into either solitary ingots or continuously produced blooms. These solidified forms are further processed through reheating and forging or rolling to achieve the required thickness. To ensure a uniform internal structure, the material undergoes solution annealing, followed by rapid water quenching.
Duplex 2507 pipe materials can be shaped using either hot or cold forming techniques. For hot forming, temperatures should range between 1024 °C and 1232 °C. Post hot forming, a solution annealing process at 1052-1125 °C, followed by quick water quenching, is essential. Cold forming methods-such as bending, deep drawing, extruding, and pressing-also require subsequent heat treatment, including solution annealing and quenching.
Duplex 2507 stainless steel is classified as a super duplex stainless steel, characterized by a microstructure containing roughly equal portions of ferrite and austenite. This balanced composition delivers high mechanical strength and outstanding corrosion resistance. Different grades of duplex steels offer varying levels of localized corrosion resistance, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. Duplex stainless steels are categorized into four types based on their PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) range, with super duplex stainless steel boasting a PREN number between 38 and 45.

This superior corrosion resistance outperforms other stainless steel grades like 254SMO. Additionally, Duplex 2507 demonstrates remarkable resistance to various forms of corrosion, including Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC), crevice corrosion, and general corrosion. These qualities make Duplex 2507 an adaptable and reliable choice for diverse applications in harsh environments.
Duplex 2507 offers twice the yield strength of 300 series stainless steel. This significant strength advantage allows for the use of thinner steel sections, resulting in lower material costs for equipment operating under identical load conditions.
With double the yield and tensile strength compared to standard stainless steel, Duplex 2507 provides significantly enhanced wear resistance.
