Protection Mechanisms of ABB 5SHY Series IGCT Products

  1. Overload Protection:
By monitoring the current, when the current exceeds the set overload threshold, the protection circuit is triggered to limit the current or turn off the device, preventing damage to the IGCT from prolonged overload. For example, in industrial motor drive applications, if a sudden increase in motor load causes current overload, the overload protection mechanism acts promptly to safeguard the IGCT and the entire system.
  2. Short-Circuit Protection:
When a short-circuit fault is detected (i.e., the current suddenly increases significantly beyond the normal operating range), the short-circuit protection mechanism responds rapidly to quickly turn off the IGCT, avoiding irreversible damage to the device from the short-circuit current. For instance, in power transmission systems, short-circuit protection can quickly cut off the faulty circuit during a line short circuit.
  3. Overvoltage Protection:
Real-time monitoring of the voltage across the IGCT. When the voltage exceeds the specified maximum withstand value, the overvoltage protection circuit activates to limit the voltage or turn off the device, preventing insulation breakdown and other issues caused by overvoltage. For example, in power supply systems, overvoltage protection can shield the IGCT from damage when the input voltage suddenly surges.
  4. Undervoltage Protection:
When the power supply voltage drops below the minimum value required for the IGCT’s normal operation, the undervoltage protection mechanism intervenes to stop the IGCT from operating or take corresponding measures, avoiding abnormal device operation or damage due to undervoltage. For example, in control systems with high requirements for power stability, undervoltage protection ensures the IGCT operates within an appropriate voltage range.
