Description
Aluminum fluoride is a colorless compound with the formula AlF3. It is primarily used in aluminum production. It can occur naturally in the forms of oskarssonite and rosenbergite. It can also be manufactured. The vast majority of aluminum fluoride is produced by reacting hydrogen fluoride with alumina or heating alumina to 700°C.
Applications
Additive used in the production of metallic aluminum.Aluminum fluoride(AlF3)is widely used as an additive in the production of electrolytic aluminum.
Aluminum fluoride is used in the aluminum electrolysis industry to reduce the melting temperature of electrolytes and increase electrical conductivity,as a flux for non-ferrous metals,as a flux and glaze component for ceramic and enamel glazes,and as an inhibitor of parafermentation in the production of essential oils.Used as an inhibitor in the production of alcohol for secondary fermentation.It is used for welding fluids in metal welding and for manufacturing optical lenses.
Aluminum Fluoride is widely used as an additive in the production of electrolytic aluminum.Used with cryolite,aluminum fluoride lowers the melting point to below 1000°C,forming a molten salt that dissolves in water.This molten solution is then electrolyzed to produce metallic aluminum.
