ABB provides efficient motors and frequency converters to Yara, an international nitrogen based compound fertilizer manufacturer, to help Yara improve its energy efficiency at its main production base in Boshgren, Norway. This is a long-term upgrade project that will save 32000 to 40000 megawatt hours of energy annually while reducing 12000 to 19000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions - equivalent to nearly 14000 standard cars' emissions.
In the first phase of the project, approximately 1000 low-voltage motors at the Boshgren factory have been successfully replaced with IE3 motors, meeting the minimum efficiency level required by the latest ecological design regulations that came into effect in July 2021. Among them, 75% of the motors have added frequency converters, greatly improving energy efficiency and saving approximately 16000 megawatt hours of energy annually.
At present, the factory is conducting long-term planning for the second phase project, and the relevant planning content will be implemented in equipment upgrades and replacements as well as new projects. Ultimately, it will be achieved to upgrade 2500 motors with an average power of 75 kW to IE5 synchronous reluctance motors and frequency converters. Among them, nearly 70% of the motors will be used in pump and fan applications, which can bring significant energy-saving benefits.
In addition to saving energy and reducing carbon emissions, Yara also hopes to reduce mechanical stress and wear by using motors and frequency converters, thereby extending the service life of the machinery and significantly saving maintenance costs.
