Floating Caliper Disc Brake

The caliper of the floating caliper disc brake is generally designed to slide axially relative to the brake disc. A hydraulic cylinder is provided only on the inside of the disc, while the outer brake block is attached to the caliper body.

Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram of the structure of a floating caliper disc brake. The caliper bracket 3 is fixed to the steering knuckle, and the caliper body 1 and bracket 3 can slide axially along the guide pin 2. When braking, the piston 8, under the action of hydraulic pressure p1, pushes the movable brake block 6 (with friction block wear alarm device) to the brake disc 4. At the same time, the reaction force p2 acting on the brake caliper body 1 pushes the brake caliper body to move to the right along the guiding pin 2, so that the fixed brake block 5 fixed on the brake caliper body presses against the brake disc. As a result, the friction blocks on both sides of the brake disc clamp the brake disc under the action of p1 and p2, which generates a braking torque on the brake disc in the direction opposite to the direction of movement, thus prompting the vehicle to brake.

Contrary to the fixed-caliper disc brake, the single-side hydraulic cylinder structure of the floating-caliper disc brake does not require an oil passage across the brake disc, so not only are the axial and radial dimensions smaller, and it is possible to arrange it closer to the wheel hub, but there is also less chance of heat vaporisation of the braking fluid.
