A Brief Analysis of 7 Common Defects in Steel Surface

crack

Defect characteristics: Cracks are generally linear, sometimes "Y" shape, and their directions are more consistent with the rolling direction, but there are other directions, generally the opening is acute.

Cause: The submerged air bubbles of the steel ingot, uncleaned cracks, and non-metallic inclusions are cracked or extended during rolling to form cracks, and the internal cracks of the ingot are enlarged during rolling and exposed to the surface to form cracks. Uneven heating of steel ingots and billets, low steel temperature and incorrect rolling, and inconsistent extension of each part, cracks may also occur. High carbon steel and alloy steel can also cause cracks due to excessive heating speed or improper cooling.

Scratch (scratch)

Defect features: Longitudinal elongated concave defects in the rolling direction, the shape and depth, width and width vary with the cause.

Cause: It is due to the accumulation of iron oxide scale, metal particles or other foreign matter in the steel in the guide device, which is scratched by contact with high-temperature and high-speed rolling stock, or due to improper installation of the guide plate and its abnormal loss, and poor maintenance.

fold

Defect characteristics: The defects with a certain inclination angle and approximate crack along the rolling direction are called folds. They are generally linear and jagged. They appear in the local or full length of the steel, and the depth is different. There is iron oxide inside. Sometimes It is also tongue-shaped and regularly distributed on the surface of the steel. The steel surfaces partially overlap and have obvious fold lines.

Cause: The burrs, burrs, wrinkles, sharp edges and the like generated by the steel during forging and rolling are pressed into the metal when rolling is continued, and folding is formed. The ear formed during the initial rolling is overwhelmed during the rolling process and also forms a folding defect. When cleaning surface defects of raw materials, folding defects may occur if the aspect ratio is not suitable.

Ear

Defect characteristics: On the surface of the steel, corresponding to the opening of the hole type, the protrusion in the rolling direction is called the ear, some are unilateral, some are bilateral, some penetrate the full length of the steel, and some are partially of. The ear is generally narrow at the bottom and has a large width and a small height.

Causes: improper adjustment of the rolling mill, deflection of the guide plate, looseness or oversize, and roll sway caused by the overfilling of the rolled piece in the hole type.

Solder

Defect characteristics: generally appear at both ends of the steel, showing a scar, etc., irregularly distributed at the end of the steel, the outline is irregular.

Cause: The initial section of the steel has a large cross-section and is flame-cut. There is a weld bead at the end of the steel, and the end of the rolled material is left with a weld when it is removed by water welding.

End burr

Defect characteristics: generally appear at both ends of the steel, in the form of a flash, burr, etc., irregularly distributed at the end of the steel.

Cause: When the sawing material is sawed, the saw blade is seriously worn or the blade is improperly adjusted, causing flash and burrs at both ends of the steel.
