In 2012, the GDP of Zhangjiajie surpassed RMB 33.9 billion, representing a strong growth of 11.6% from the previous year. It is the smallest economy among 14 prefecture and prefecture level cities in the province.

The service sector, the largest contributor to Zhangjiajie's economy, achieved value added output of RMB 21.16 billion in 2012, contributing 62.4% of the city's GDP. The value added output from primary industry and secondary industry grew 3.5% and 12.3% to RMB 4.2 billion and RMB 8.54 billion, comprising 12.4% and 25.2% of the city's GDP, respectively.

Coal mining is a pillar of the city's industrial sector. In 2012, the city produced 0.69 million metric tons of coal, 23.2% more than it realized in 2011. Other pillar industries in the city include electricity production and supply, agricultural products processing, metallurgy and food and beverages etc.

In 2012, foreign trade in Zhangjiajie hit US$38.65 million, with a growth of 48.7% from the previous year. Foreign trade value came from its export sector hit US$35.98 million, reflecting a year on year increase of 38.4%.Major export destination include the U.S., Hong Kong, Japan, and Russia.
