In power generation applications, a gas turbine’s power/ size is measured by the power it develops in a generator (units watts, kilowatts, Megawatts). In mechanical drive applications, the gas turbine’s power is measured in horsepower (HP), which is essentially the torque developed multiplied by the turbine’s rotational speed. In aircraft engine applications, if the turbine is driving a rotor (helicopter) or propeller (turboprop aircraft) then its power is measured in horsepower. This means that the torque transmission from the gas turbine shaft is, in principle, a variation of mechanical drive application. If an aircraft gas turbine engines operates in turbothrust or ramjet mode, (i.e. the gas turbine expels its exhaust gases and the thrust of that expulsion, propels the aircraft forward), its power is measured in pounds of thrust.
